When an Amish persons turns 16, they can choose to leave the community and live "in the world".

It is considered a matter of repentance. If a person is still active in an unacceptable lifestyle then they have not repented of their action.

Forgiveness and shunning are two different things. The Amish believe, like many others, that you must love and forgive your enemies, as Jesus or the Buddha would do.The concept of shunning, also practiced by other religions ,says you should not associate yourself with those who leave to avoid temptation and sin. This is not a totally adequate answer but it just points out the difference.

very cunning way of doing something inhuman and then conveniently explaining it away

shunning your children is the act of satan

forcing someone you love to be completely cut off with no family support because of a religion is pathetic;
someone who is 16-25, who is ill equipped to take care of themselves in the modern world, to choose between family and completely segregating themselves from an evolving world so that your children will be bound by rules for the rest of there life in decision that they were propagated to believe, i do not see the difference in the brainwashing done by the amish and the nazi SS, difference only to what means they're doing it for

not encouraging your children to be the best they can, is disgraceful

for us chinese folks, probably called 井底蛙,
井 - a water well
底 - bottom
蛙 - frog

it means a frog that is stuck at the bottom of a well, where the only sky they know is the sky from the top of the well, the only ground is the ground at the bottom of the well

not letting your children continue there studies for higher learning? why? knowledge is the greatest good and for some of the greatest philosophers, the only good
if you are so confident with your religion why do you fear educated amish children will tarnish the community,
when a person is better educated the decision they make will less likely be wrong
when a person has values and moral wisdom from there ancestor the decision they make will less likely be evil

hmm, actually those are the only two things i don't like about the amish way of life; education system and shunning your children

other than that, the physically active life style is the most healthy, there value system for community support is wonderful, they're kind and caring for the most part, even to us strangers and foreigners

but i seriously cannot agree with cutting off a family, for whatever reason, i have in me the values of ancient chinese, many generations of family living under the same roof, the strict, sense of self, good/bad, taoism, budhism, wisdom

what kind of god would allow something like shunning, from what i know about jesus, the guy would probably cry a river if he knew that people actually believe there children cannot be saved, what did he die for if it really were the case, i wonder who should really be sent to hell now that i think about it
