I believe like the Lutherans, the Anglicans believe in Consubstantiation, not Transubstatiation.

One holds that the Eucharist is 2 things at once. Bread, but ALSO Christ's body and blood.

The latter holds that one thing becomes another. That is, it is bread and then becomes the body and blood of Christ.

Consubstatitation leads to more of a metaphorical, non-literal view of the Eucharist. As if it is only his body and blood SPIRITUALLY, but not physically.

Transubstantiation leads to a more physical, literal view of the Eucharist. As if it is TRULY the body and blood, not just "spiritually" speaking.

THAT.... and to the Catholic church.. the Anglican church no longer had a valid Priesthood once they broke off. When they broke off.. to the Catholic church, they also broke with Apostlic succession. That is from the Catholic perspective they didn't have a valid link BACK to the Apostles anymore. They were making themselves their OWN, separate authority.

Obviously from the Anglican view, since their Bishops were once Catholic.. they carried with them that valid succession and therefore DO have a valid Priesthood from the Apostles.

At the Last Supper, Jesus said, ?Take this bread. It is my body.? Then he said, ?Take this and drink. This is my blood. Do this in memory of me.?

Catholics believe this was the First Eucharist, that through a miracle the bread and wine actually became the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

Catholics reenact the Last Supper during every Mass, where God, acting through the priest, changes the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

This is a great sacrament of thanksgiving and unity of Catholics.

By the way, the Eastern Catholic, Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, the Lutheran and many (but not all) Anglican Churches also believe in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. This is more than half of all Christians in the world.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 1322 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt2sect2chpt1art3.shtml

With love in Christ.
