Default Asatru information?

As a person of Swedish/German descent, I'm interested in the religion of my ancestors. Does anyone know of some good Internet sites for information on Asatru?

I ask to avoid wading through dud sites on a Google search.

Thanks for any help.
Manda C: I guess I'm pretty ignorant about it; wasn't aware of the various branches. Just an overview of the branches would be a good place for me to start.

Asatru is a wide field. Which branch are you thinking?

Below is a link to an overview of Odinism. It is in fact a popular German choice.

Answer: I've starred this question for some of the Heathen members of the JPA and other Asatru/Heathen contacts of mine as they have FAR better information on the subject than I do.

And the invaluable, massive and detailed (although not always right)

http://northvegr.org/main.php

there's also

and

Good luck

I'd like to second the recommendation of the Asatru-U Beginner's Course---it's a bit "dated" and not all the links work, but it's still a fairly competent and comprehensive overview of the basics:

http://www.asatru-u.org/

In America, the three main nationwide Asatru organizations are the Asatru Folk Assembly, the Asatru Alliance, and the Troth.

http://www.asatru.org/
http://www.thetroth.org/

I'd start with just those, then ask questions that come up as they arise.

I agree with Kahlesssword, http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/paganism/subdivisions/heathenry_1.shtml is an excellent set of pages, the fact it was written by a group of genuine practicing Heathens makes it a must. These pages also include the names of the various groups of modern Heathens.

Here's mine; I've worked on it for years and it includes articles published in a number of respected Heathen magazines.

You got a lot of good links.
Here are more.
The Norroena Society http://www.norroena.org/Aegir.html
Free Folk Society http://www.freefolk.org/
The Assembly of The Elder Troth http://www.aetaustralia.org/thorrablot.htm
The Way http://www.voluspa.org/
Assoc of Polytheistic Traditions http://www.manygods.org.uk/
Irminenschaft http://irminenschaft.net/
The Odinic Rite http://www.odinic-rite.org/index2.html

Beliefnet.com is also a great place to connect and learn some about all sorts of beliefs.
Here's the link to the Reconstructionist section.
http://www.beliefnet.com/index/index_40313.html

Also, there are generally smaller local groups (for example, I belong to an Elset for Heathens in the US Northeast, and there's also one for New England) where you can get to know Heathens who are actually close enough to meet and gather with. So if you decide this is the path for you, and get into some of the larger groups, you could, from there, ask about local groups.

Lastly, I want to mention terms, like Asatru.
One Heathen here considers it an umbrella term, but you will find many variations on what Heathens consider the term to mean.
We aren't an organized religion, so everyone has their own way of looking at some of these terms.
Myself, I consider the "umbrella term" for paths that seek to follow the indigenous beliefs of Northern Europe (Germanic, Teutonic) to be "Heathenry" and all such persons to be "Heathens".
[I also consider Heathenry to be a different thing from Paganism, and in my view, it should not fall under the Pagan umbrella. That's not anything against Pagans, of course, it's simply because Heathenry is specific to certain gods, and is very different from most Pagan belief systems.]
Under the umbrella of Heathenry (in my view, anyway), you will find Odinists, Irminists, Theodists, Asatruar, "Norse Pagans", and any number of other paths.
All honor the same gods, tho god-names vary by region (Odin, Othinn, Wodan).

Some are different because they concentrate on region- some following the Goth god-names and traditions, some following Anglo-saxon, and some following the Norse/Viking.
I generally consider Asatru to delineate people who focus more on the Norse of things, but that isn't always true.

Some are different because they focus on hierarchy (of sorts) and/or strict reconstructionism (Theodism would be an example).

But we all honor the same gods.
