Default Anyone know anything about Asatru?

I've done some research on it, but I still don't really know anything about it. Anyone practice/know someone who practices Asatru? I'm looking to get some information on it, and maybe join it.

answer: Yes, I'm very versed in Asatru/Heathenism.

http://www.asatru-u.org/beginner/asau-beginner-outline.htm

That's a good starting place. I can also answer questions through email.

Yes, I've been a practicing Asatruar for 14 years.
Here is my website: http://home.earthlink.net/~jordsvin
Here is my Heathen News list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HeathenNews
Between these two resources you should find a great deal of info on history, beliefs, literature, rituals, ethics, Runes, trance work and more. Feel free to email me from my web page any time! All the best, Jordsvin

Best thing to do is buy some books of the translated Edda's and such then base your own judgments.

Quite a bit actually. I can only give the same response that I would give to a suicidal person "don't do it". See, there is a whole world of Heathenry out there, and just like Wicca has dominated Paganism for the last thirty some odd years, Asatru has done the same to Heathenry. Yeah its annoying, but what can you do about it? Asatruar are like the dead-heads of the Heathen world... anyone can claim to be one, and as soon as they do they often think themselves an expert. Longevity within the "faith" doesn't count for anything because so many of these guys have been doing the SAME EXACT THING year after year. Repetition doesn't account for growth... if anything it is its antithesis.

So if you want to drink beer from a horn, scream "Hail Odin", and act like a viking wannabee dork... well then, Asatru might be right for you. If you want a real religion with depth and beauty... you might want to keep looking in the Heathen waters till something else comes along.

ADDED: 11/04/2008 - A shallow understanding of Asatru... that's rich. Just so you know, I wrote the blurb on the back of the book you recommended. If anything, Galina's book (a dear friend of mine) is a treatise against the Asatru that has permeated the Heathen scene for the last thirty years, and an exploration of the OTHER forms of Heathenry.

Asatru can be considered as the Icelandic model of a spiritual path our northern European ancestors lived. Too bad cementNDas such a shallow understanding of it... At any rate, try reading a couple of books and continue asking questions. I'd recommend Galina Kraskova's book, Exploring The Northern Tradition as a good place to start: http://www.wyrdsway.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=175

Follow you heart and instincts in this and you won't do badly...

Good luck!
