Default For those of the Asatru religion. What is your opinion of Norse wicca?

Is it OK as long as I don't call myself Asatru?

As a Wiccan I won't claim to speak for them, but wouldn't you be happier practicing both faiths instead of trying to smash them into one?

Anyone familiar with the actual mysteries of Wicca, not pop-Wicca, knows the poly faith approach works (and, indeed, most of our ancestors were poly faithed or pancreatic at some point) without insulting anyone.

I guess I ask because with such a rich cultural history in Asatru, I don't understand why one would also be interested in Wicca (I presume for the agricultural mysteries/camaraderie) or feel the need to scumssh em. The Norse theos isn't exactly agriculture-centric.

I agree with Tyrsson.
It's basically fence sitting - one should decide to either be a proper Wiccan, or proper Norse Heathen. These pick-and-mix do-it-yourself religious mixes don't lead anywhere.

But then again, it's your life and your belief. If you think that it's the right one for you, nobody can tell you not to do it.
As for calling yourself Asatru - there are many many Norse Heathens who refuse to use the "Astra" label for themselves. Some of the most true people I know would still never call themselves Astra.

I really don't know where to start with what's wrong with Norse Wicca, unless you mean God & Goddess worship practiced in Norwegian. Seriously Asatru is a modern interpretation of the ancestral hard polytheist beliefs of our ancestors, Wicca is a modern soft polytheist "mystery religion"; the two are not compatible.

Asatru is only one kind of Heathenry and does have similarities with Wicca in some of its rituals but the mindset and understanding of deity is completely different. I would suggest that if you mix Heathenry and Wicca will not benefit or truly understand either.

Nods to Ymmo, as a re constructionist and proud "hen wigwagging" I would never use the name Asatru to describe my mindset and I am further from Wicca than you could imagine.

Norse Wicca? I have heard that name thrown around for a few years now, and find it growing ever larger as something that I don't like.

Its bad enough that we have people who ACT like that already ("vicunas at heart" who don't think that Wicca is "Macho" enough for them, so they call themselves Asatru), but to give it any credibility is just downright insulting to the Old Gods that I worship.

I realize that one can call themselves whatever they want, but to mix an actual religion with something make up in the 1930s is just beyond anything that is decent. Its like calling yourself a Catholic-Assembly of God member.

EDIT: as for the answer that said that the Norse Gods weren't aggro-centric. They better read a bit more than "Thor" comic books. Sif, Frey, Freyja, are just three, there are more.

answer: There are Heathens who don't use the Asatru label. As for Norse Wicca or Wicca-Tru...... let's just say I'm a reconstruction type Heathen. I don't agree with mixing Wicca with Heathenism - they are incompatible.

For a good (if long) paper on this do a go ogle search on The Hammer and the Pentagram. It was written by a Wiccan and a Heathen and goes into why Heathenism (Asatru) and Wicca don't mix.

I'd recommend getting the book: "Essential Asatru" by Diana Paxson, it's a good beginner book on Heathenism. The gods might be calling you and Heathenism is VERY rich in traditions, rituals, holidays and deities without mixing Wicca into it.

Well, I will give you points for bravery on asking us.

As stated above many don't like the label of Asatru either as they don't feel it describes our folkways. I'll answer to it, but I prefer Heathen.

And to put it all bluntly, and in a way that other pagans don't like but is painfully true, you are either a Heathen or you aren't. It's the way we are and I don't see us changing on that. The community at large does not embrace a lot of the Wicca worldviews and vice verse. I have a great deal of respect for many Wiccans I know, but we are worlds apart on a lot of things. Important things.

And Labgrrl had a point. Why do you feel the need to merge? Be Wicca or don't. It's really pretty simple.

To answer your question "Norse Wiccans" are frowned upon GREATLY in the Asatru/Heathen community. We do not like the way they rape our traditions and mash them into something more "palatable". If you don't like the way we do things, don't play on our playground.
