Default Where are you who believe in Asatru from and share some information about your believ

Well I'm from Iceland so I can read all the Icelandic sagas in it's original language and Hamel, in Icelandic schools we read the sagas and learn about the gods.
When did you learn about Astra and started following it?
I would consider myself as a secular Astra because I really don't believe that the stories are real but I still love them.

answer: 1992 - I read the book "A Book of Troth" by Edred Thorsson and was hooked instantly. I found the religion that holds honor, courage, loyalty, knowledge and family in the highest regard. Then I had an encounter that connected me with Odin and Freya.

I and my Kindred celebrate the holiday blots and a monthly blot to celebrate the gods/goddesses, ancestors, family, friends and ourselves. We have a prison outreach for women heathens locally and go camping once a year with other Heathens.

I am not Asatru, though I work with the old gods, particularly Odin, Thor, Loki, Braggi and Idun. I am from Pittsburgh. They came to me, not me to them. I later read the Eddas to get a more traditional view of them, but my unverified personal nosies (though I certainly didn't even know that term at the time) has come out to be pretty accurate to the stories I later read.

I found out about it in around 1985 reading a book about Pagan religions today, called Drawing Down the Moon, by Margot Adler. The section about Asatru was not all that good but I was intrigued. I didn't actually become a believer until about 9 years later, after I left Chrisitianity for various reasons I won't go into here. I've been a practicing Heathen for about 14 years now. I have a big Asatru page that I hope folks will check out:

Also a news list of Asatru and other Heathens:

And another about Seidhr:

Few Asatru folks take the myths literally; but there is much to learn from them. The Gods, we do experience as real. Call on them and you might be surprised!

O grew up with a kid that followed this way, i started getting serious when a guy asked me if i knew where my ancestors come from and WHO they was. from there it has been a long road off learning and self evaluation. the stories are just that, unless you look deeper within and turn that in word. did Odin actually pluck his eye out? i think it just means to quit looking around for the answers and look inward. Thor the big Tiff guy dressing like a wife, well maybe saying to put pride aside to best accomplish your goal? Manny different opinions on all but if i look at how my ancestors lived i can see that applying these morals and values to my life is a plus!! just the HamelALells us things that use to be everyday, but the current GENERATION seemed to loose. well don't know if this helped any but could just keep going on forever!!
