Are you Nordic? Choose a name that fits with your heritage. Just a few hints. Never give a child a first name that ends with the same letter as the beginning of the last name, such as Anna Albert, because it sounds like one name. Carefully look at the initials so you aren't giving them initials such as ASS or FUC or BUT. Really embarrassing! And also look at how the first name sounds and looks like with the last name. When I was in school, the Principal's last name was Pigg. His mother's name was Ima. Honest to goodness this is true.

And last but not least, please don't give a name that people can't figure out how to pronounce or spell! It's tough on little kids when they have to constantly tell people how to say or spell their name. It's really frustrating to them.

I never had any names picked out ahead of time for all 4 of my children. I had to look at them first.

Are you a member of the movement? No problem with you either way, it's just that I know a lot of pagans but have yet to meet an Asatru.

In general, parents named their children after a deceased relative or hero. In some way the child was believed to inherit with the name the gifts or personality of their namesake: this belief almost seems to have been one of reincarnation of the named relative in the new child once the name was bestowed.

It was very common to give children the names of honored relatives, for the Northmen believed that children would partake of the virtues of the ones whose names they bore. Relatives recently dead, in particular, were thus remembered by their kindred, a custom resulting from a half belief that the spirit of the beloved dead lived again in the little child. Present day Scandinavians still "call up" deceased members of their families in this manner. (Social Scandinavia p. 61).
The religious basis of the practice was that a departed ancestor is reborn and again rejoins the living members of the family if his/her name is given to the new-born child. Only the departed ancestor was, therefore, renamed so long as the belief was a living force.

I used my grandmother's name. I wanted all the kids to have a family name but my husband wouldn't go for it. Go through the family tree.
Hail the Ancestors!
