Default A quick question regarding Asatru (Specifically regarding the practice of Bl?t)?

Well, I was looking up Germanic Neopaganism on Wikipedia, and saw this:

"Bl?t is the historical Norse term for sacrifice or ritual slaughter. In Germanic Neopaganism, blots are often celebrated outdoors in nature. A blot may be highly formalized, but the underlying intent resembles inviting and having an honored guest or family member in for dinner. Food and drink may be offered. Most of this will be consumed by the participants, and some of the drink will be poured out onto the soil as a libation. Home-brewed mead as the "Germanic" drink par excellence is popular"

-

Does this mean that animals are actually sacrificed in addition to the Mead offering thing? Do some Heathens still sacrifice animals or has that practice died out now?

I've also heard that some Heathens offer their own blood? I may be wrong though, do feel free to correct me if I am.

Yes, some Heathens do offer blood sacrifice. A Heathen friend told me about a blot she went to where they sacrificed a goat and then cooked it to share with each other afterward. She said it was one of the most spiritual experiences of her life.

I don't know about offering their own blood, but some Heathens do use their own blood (or other vital fluids) to stain and ritually seal their runes.

The majority of animal sacrifices in Prue-Christian Europe would be used to feed people, more like a barbecue than something from fiction stories about "sacrifice." Most re constructionists know this.

I've been honored to be invited to such a thing- better by far than getting meat from a factory farm.

* Its done rarely. Usually it's a pig or a goat and it's cooked for the feast of the gathering. There's a lot of hard work to ensure that the animal doesn't suffer, contrary to being in a slaughterhouse.

Many Heathens don't feel it's necessary to offer up animals - mead/ale and food are fine.

First Wikipedia is a good place to get some general information; but be fore warned some of those articles are not written by experts. So what you read on Wikipedia you really need to verify on other more reliable websites.

A Bl?t is the Norse word for ritual or ceremony. Like most religions, including Christianity, animals were sacrificed in the name of the "god/s" historically speaking. That doesn't mean people go out, strap a sheep to an altar and shove a knife into it's chest today. Though religions still sacrifice animals for their holiday rituals. From Christmas to Samhain.

Instead of listening to what you "heard" do some real research and study the beliefs of others before you just believe in what you're told. There are many official and legitimate sites you can find about Asatru and Odinism.
