Default Campfire Friday: Heathen Asatru question???

When Carving Runes into my Mjolnir (Thor's Hammer) should I write it in Old Norse?

And how do I choose what all to put on it?
I was thinking "Thor the Hollower" and "Mjolnir the Crusher"

What do you think?

First off, I'm not Asatru, so, my suggestion is offered with due respect, and I accept that you may decide not to follow it.
My feeling is that it would be better "written" in your language, as it has a greater meaning if you can read it, without references.
The inscriptions sound great.
Thank you for allowing me to offer a suggestion.

Animist.

How about Frig the Frigger?

I hated all those Norse names like

Soren Thorvaldberg Firungesdinbesterdottirfosterindersohn.

Great gods! Want a nice name? Try something like John Smith. Two syllables. That's more like it!

Do what you will. Both of them seem good. Let the moment speak to you.

If you know the old Norse well enough that you can pull it off without major mistakes, I guess go for it.
If you can't speak O.N., I'd advise you against using various on line translators. Find someone who can actually speak it to translate it for you.

Now the inscriptions on various amulets were historically of two kinds: one is just individual runes, or sets of individual runes repeated several times
like on the Lindholm Amulet: http://www.asatru.si/articles/pictures/lindholm.jpg

This was obviously done with some sort of a magical or protective purpose, because the repeated runes don't spell out any particular word.

Now the second type of runic inscriptions on objects were simply the claims of ownership ("I belong to Such and Such, or This spear is the property of Such-and-such), or the information about who made the object (Such-and-such made me, sometimes a date or a purpose is also stated.)

Another form of rune magic uses inscriptions for evoking the power of the word. For example, one would write "health" in runes several times on a piece of wood and burn it, or on a piece of cheese and eat it. Writing the word in runes several times while concentrating on the meaning of the word is basically the entire "spell".

What purpose did you have in mind by putting such an inscription on your hammer? Avoid doing things just "cause it looks cool" or similar reasons.
Runes have power. Be careful what you do with them, study them carefully in advance and make sure you know what is your purpose for doing anything with them, BEFORE you do it.

Either or both would be suitable. Also a series of 3 Thurisaz runes down the handle or on the top of the head of the hammer would be fitting as would a sun-wheel on each of the ends of the head.

As a general rule I encourage folks to use in their rituals the language they normally speak: that's what the Vikings did! However, I'm certainly not adverse to a bit of the Old Tongues.

I have to agree with Ymmo.

If you are going to write runes on anything it should be well thought out and well meditated on.

If you do meditate on this and decide it is the correct path.

I always use English or some of the few words I know of Old Norse, and Icelandic.

Enghlish is part Germanic anyways, and it really is the thought and meaning that count.
