Default How many Asatru (Norse Pagans) are there in America?

I've been researching for a while, and I can't seem to find any number of people practicing Asatru in America. I've been able to find the number of Pagans in America, and many statistics involving that, but not the number of Asatru specifically. I was wondering if anyone had actually done such research, or if anyone knew the membership of major Asatru groups like the Troth and the Asatru Alliance,

Isn't the whole idea with Paganism to remain a bit out of the lime light?

very few -- most of them are happy to be Christians and grateful that we offer them Salvation through Jesus

There are about 10,000 to 20,000 Asatruars in North America according to McNallen. This is of course just one man's guess, no one knows for sure what our population numbers are. Also for the record Asatruars prefer being called Heathen instead of Pagan.

It's impossible to know the exact number as many Germanic Pagans are not members of any of the National organizations and the census does not ask for religious affiliation.

Not all Heathens are Asatru by the way

don't know really I know the number of Heathens has more than tripled in the past couple of years though. many Heathens stay out of the spot light especially the ones in dangerous parts of the mid west where being Heathen can get you killed.

Faith group memberships are always in flux and there are a lot of "free range" heathens out there, as a friend of mine puts it. Many people choose to be independent (or part of a local kindred or Garth only) rather than affiliate with any large organizations such as Troth, AFA, or AA.

I look at it this way... one million people self-identified as "new age, Wicca, pagan, or other" in the last U.S. Census on religion. If just one percent of that figure is Asatru, that's 10,000 people... but of course that is not at all scientific and the numbers could be wildly different either way.

One thing is for sure, the numbers are constantly rising. More and more new people have joined the Northeastern community in recent years and one of the non-affiliated chat groups for the region has close to 600 members.

for some of us in out of the way places, deep in the heart of the bible belt, often wonder the question, how many others are there out there. and the best i say is I've heard that there are between 10,000-20,000 out there, but even if we are out numbered, we won't be out spirited.

Hail the seeker of knowledge.
