Well, Manowar are heavy metal, but pretty nice and melodic (a bit like Iron Maiden, if you like that sort of music).
They have a theme-album called Gods of War.

Apart from that, try folk metal. As Pangel said, it's very melodic, full of instruments like violins and flutes and it's light-years away from death metal growling like Amon Amarth.

Tyr, Turisas, Korpiklaani - great bands.

Oh I am totally addicted to Amon Amarth. A good friend of mine got me hooked on it and I don't even like metal. LOL
