Default What is your favorite Asatru verse?

LS, *wink wink* I know almost nothing of Asatru and am very interested in learning about what some of the favorite "verses" are.

I don't know if Asatru have verses. I don't know much about Asatru either. I do know they have the Nine Virtues though.

Well Asatru doesn't really have any verses per SE because we really don't go by any sort of Bible or anything like that. We draw inspiration from ancient Nordic writings such as the Eddas, the Sagas, and other Icelandic/Norwegian poems and stories but I wouldn't say that any of us really draws on them as holy writ. A few works in the Eddas like the Havamal and the Voluspa are considered important though, and actually the Nine Noble Virtues are derived from the advice Odin gives in the Havamal. But no, you won't see too many Asatruar throwing around quotes from the Eddas like Christians do from the Bible, although some individuals might have favorite poems.

Honor is that name which lives after you when your life is over, as in the well known verses from H?vam?l (76-77)

"Cattle die, kinsmen die, you yourself shall likewise die.

But word-glory dies never, for him who gets it well.

Cattle die, kinsmen die, you yourself shall likewise die.

I know one thing that never dies: the deeming over every dead man."

This is true even with the Gods and Goddesses themselves. Voluspa tells us how Thor, even as he sees the Middle-Garth?s Wyrm die beneath his hammer steps back nine steps and dies ?fearing no shame?: and how in the new world, those deities who have lived though Ragnar?k speak of his deed again and deem its worth.

Yes, this Asatruar does consider H?vam?l to be sacred writing. H?vam?l is one of the most famous and important of the Eddaic poems. The Eddas signify for Norse culture what the Vedas mean to India and the Homeric poems are for the Greeks. Their variety and wealth are such that hey have been a source of inspiration and delight for generations and still are.
