Is their elitism a defense mechanism, because they are so few? Does it help them to pretend they are smarter than others?
Aurora, can atheists be shamed for hubris? Is it inconsistent for them?
I don't think one causes the other in either case. I've seen plenty of non-atheists that are over-flowing with hubris. I do believe that is one of the 7 deadly sins.
Pride goes before a fall. That goes for believers and non-believers.
To an atheist, deism is hubris. How pompous and self important is the notion that an all powerful being cares about whether people like you believe in Him or not?
I spoke recently with an atheist, who is pained that she lost her faith. I don't think she suffers from hubris. I wouldn't consider her elitist at all.
Pretending to be smarter is not hubris. Pretending to know the truth of anything uncertain is mildly arrogant.
they are separated from the holy spirit, so they only use there minds, which is limited. . all true knowledge comes from the spirit of god, they may think,, but do not have true knowledge which is drawn from god. I liked what my mother said, you can have a head knowledge, but need a heart knowledge, the only unpardonable sin is the denial of the holy spirit,
Physician, heal thyself! What do you know about defense mechanisms? You shouldn't read anything but the Bible, some zealots say. We don't need to pretend to be smarter than such people as you, for it is quite obvious that we are. You underestimate our numbers. I've seen some atheists who even attend church for social acceptability. I've heard that some preachers are atheists really. If some did believe in God, they'd fear he'd strike them down for the greed they display. Various professions must have the approval of the many religious people. One atheist I know is a politician, but he attends church and wanted me to work for him with the condition that I also attend church with him. That is too much for me. Thomas Jefferson wrote to his nephew and told the lad to study the Bible as he would any other book, i.e. critically and objectively, and that after such a study one might conclude that here is no God. That sounds like atheism to me. Jefferson was officially a Deist, as were Washington, Adams, Franklin and many Founding Fathers. They did not need to pretend to be smart. You are the one pretending to be smart. It's not convincing!
there have always been an overabundance of pompous Christians from the time of Constantine.....Does Christianity cause blindness?.......undoubtedly....
