Nope. It's just another cliche that gets thrown around way too much. Several atheist members of my family spent a large amount of time in foxholes during various wars. They're still atheists.

I really don't think there are atheists. The closest I've ever found is an agnostic (some of whom thought they were atheists).
The foxhole thing comes from the idea that even an atheist or agnostic will cry out to a higher power in a time of great distress or fear. This in no way implies that they will turn to God after the fact, simply that they will take a chance on God when all else is falling apart.
I can tell you I've never been in a foxhole in battle, but I have been in some pretty serious life-and-death situations with some pretty hardened agnostics (who thought they were atheists), and seen them call out to God, live through the situation, and deny the existence of God in the next breath.
So I would have to say that it's generally true that there are no atheists in foxholes, but that does not imply that an atheist didn't climb in, or that an atheist won't climb out of any given foxhole.

Someone on here was saying that there is no such thing as an atheist, but darn it, I can see them, they can type, and usually run a spell check. Maybe there are no atheists in foxholes in holy wars....
