Default Would you consider atheism a religion even though there is no belief in God?

No, because a person is saying they have no religion, and basically does not care what happens to them.

I'm afraid not. It shows up on Beliefnet as a religion, but it really shouldn't.

Atheism is a total denial of God's existence, and by extension, it's a total denial of religion as well.

Atheism is the natural state of all living creatures. Mankind invented religion. Atheists don't practice it.

So no, it's not a religion. It's a human being living sanely.

Not a religion per SE but definitely a belief. They provide another look from a different angle to the whole of religion. It's always good to have several views of a subject. It makes a decision much better rather than if it were based solely on one thought.

Yes, secular humanism has a doctrine, indoctrination process.
And an agenda to change others beliefs to what they view as the truth.

atheism could be a characteristic of a religion, for instance you could believe in reincarnation but not a god, but atheism in itself is not a religion

No, I'd consider it a none too clever dodge of manifest hypocrisy posing as religion. Something gave those people a bad take. It wasn't just the facts. Something derailed, those!

As an atheist, I can say no. We make decisions, and can explain things, with fact and common sense. I do not need the faith that defines religion.

I'd say a religion in the loose sense of the word does not have to include god..... rather a set of beliefs.... so yea I'd say atheism is a religion

Absolutely.
No1 today, tomorrow or day after will be able to prove that GOD does not exist.
Its easy to prove that BIblical god does not exist but the concept of GOD is far beyond our understanding.
On this note. Since atheist same as religious Pol have to use. I be live GOD exist or I don't be live GOD exist they both using be lives not the facts.
The main confusion for Pol its not about GOD its about religion its self. GOD may well exist but if he does he is defentialy not stupid or cruel and primitive like Those major religions trying to portrait him.
Look at the quantum phisics. Just another religion with modern concept.
Therefore GOD exists.
Peace.

It's not a religion, religion is a belief in something greater than us. Athiests believe in nothing. Gotta have something for a religion, therefore atheists should probably be in a different forum.

Theism means belief in any deity .. A - theism is opposite of Theism.. So evidently it means that there is no belief on any deity as such. But Atheism cannot be equated with religion. It can be a group of Pol with various beliefs, but not believing in deity. In short the only commonality suggested is non belief in deity. and no other hence the essential ingredient for a religion IE. belief in something or anything goes missing.. Hence no it can't be treated as a religion.

Here's how the Yahoo dictionary defines religion:

re?Li?gion (r-Ln) NOUN:

1. a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.
2. The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.
4. A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.

I would argue that atheism falls under definition #4 and could be called a religion.

Atheism simply means that one does not believe in a god or gods. It says nothing about other spiritual or supernatural belief. If you accept that religion can exist without theology, Buddhism, Taoism, Scientology, Unitarianism, and other faiths can all be considered non-theistic religions. It is possible to be an atheist and be any of these.

So , no. Atheism is simply a stance on one spiritual issue (the existence of god or gods) and does not hold the multiple beliefs that constitute a religion..

It's kind of a lack of religion to me, but has a sort of pseudo-faith in it, because it's not real faith since both logic and science point in it's favor, but it's still somewhat faith because it's believing something that isn't a fact. So to me, it's a slightly faith based lack of religion. Also, it's really more of a philosophy than anything else.

Yes. Buddhism is a religion which doesn't worship a God. It has beliefs. Therefore atheism has the beliefs that God doesn't exist and of evolution. Therefore atheism could be considered a religion
