It is a belief system, no? Christians don't like to be told they believe in religion, that its more of a relationship with God etc. But both get called religious however, because they each care about their beliefs so strongly. They are just opposites in lots of ways. I am a theists, and thanks for calling them all crazy. That is an opinion you hold, but obviously not based in fact.
Atheism is a religious belief in and of itself. If you speak from a philosophical standpoint, what atheist do is "act as if there is no God." That does not necessarily make anyone immoral.
While you are correct in stating that atheism isn't a religion, it is literally the lack of belief in a god, not the lack of religion. Religion isn't about having gods to worship, it's about having a basic set of beliefs regarding the nature of the universe. Most people have one in some form or another.
The really funny thing is that atheism is a religion. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to faith as well as to the larger shared systems of belief.
Atheists, in my over 50 years, I have only met a couple of "true" believers, have "faith" that there is no God. They share this system of belief with others of their faith and practice their faith through the dogmatic condemnation of those who do not believe as they do, much like some of the more restrictive theologies. It's rather comically actually, try as hard as some do, they cannot escape their fate. Rather poetic I think.
Religion - noun
1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion. ( I would add Atheism)
3. the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions. ( I would add Atheists in their many groups and forms)
4. the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion. ( I would add, certain scientists that simply do not believe in God- as if that were any proof that they were right about the existence/ non existence thereof.)
5. the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith. ( I would add, " as in Evolution.")
6. something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience: to make a religion of fighting prejudice. ( I would add, Atheists follow after their ideas that they follow devotedly)
7. religions, Archaic. religious rites.
8. Archaic. strict faithfulness; devotion: a religion to ones vow.
( I would add; as Atheists are strict in their beliefs. Any admittanceSSn a God is frowned upon, and the person usually thought to be weak minded. )
9. get religion, Informal. a. to acquire a deep conviction of the validity of religious beliefs and practices. ( As Athiests are so bound to their beliefs in Evolution.)
b. to resolve to mend one's errant ways: The company got religion and stopped making dangerous products. (
Atheists got religion to replace any that are already there. Just as valid my friend.)
So it sounds and looks like a religion to me! ( ;
Look how you are defending it as if; anyone who believe's in God is 'crazy.' As I said. You and many of you Atheists sound very religious indeed!
I don't think it's a religion, but I do know that God doesn't believe in Atheists. Stranger still Athists claim not to believe in God, but you have to believe at least a little to even reference the god you claim not to believe in, because to say the name God gives him some form of existence. I'd be more willing to believe them if they were Agnostic and weren't sure if he existed as opposed to them talking about something they claim not to believe in in the first place. Does anyone Else's head hurt?
