Your circle of friends is quite limited. Why not attend a church and expand your horizons and you'll find your converted atheists? In fact, I was once an atheist for nearly ten years and found no peace and real love until I made Jesus Christ my Savior and Lord.
Well, they are out there.
One in particular that comes to mind is the author of the hymn "Amazing Grace" - he was the captain of a slave ship until one day, out of the blue, he was "blinded by the light" so to speak. Hence, the words of that popular hymn. He stopped being a slave trader and became a minister instead.
There are others too, but I don't have much time left for this.
I've heard stories from a few people who claimed to have been atheists and converted to theism. When i probe them for details it's often the case that they are either back filling their story with their current attitudes or they were more along the lines of an agnostic theist than an atheist prior to their conversions.
I've also encountered people who seem to have genuinely been atheists but converted to theism for silly reasons like their inability to reconcile the idea of nonexistence or falling for one of the many fallacious ontological arguments.
There is normally a reason for turning to atheist. I don't like crackpot folklore so I converted FROM Christianity to atheist. Of course I had nothing to believe in then until I found Taoism. Thus converting FROM atheist to Taoist, ultimately mooting your point.
Religion can sometimes be a scary thing. It can sometimes ends up as a cult with controlling leaders and strict rules, as i have experienced, and this can be frightening to some. Also, when unfortunate events occur in peoples lives, they think why would god let this happen. So, in the end it could be too scary, too supernatural or too disappointing. Although i do know alto of people who have switched from atheism to Christianity and i am still a strong believer in the word of god.
It is simply normal and natural to rebel against God. No one wants someone else telling them how to live and what to do. Everyone one wants to be their own God. That is the very nature of sin itself. So you are merely pointing out our sinful nature. But God knows this will lead to our own final everlasting destruction if we do not make some sort of effort to FREELY acknowledge our dependence upon God. We are not God. So it is simply a matter of free choice. And we will reap the final consequences of our actions.
Many people do find salvation after being an atheist. I know one person who was my teachers son, and my teacher was very religious, yet her son was rebellious, and didn't believe in God at all. He found out he had stomach cancer, and came home to her and asked her to help him become saved. He went to church with her and she helped him and he turned out to become a true Christian. I am a Christian as well, I have never been an atheist, but I was raised in a Christian family, but never made to be a Christian, I made that decision on my own. But once your TRULY saved you will not go back to atheism, that is said in the Bible.
