It is a learned behavior. Someone started doing this and more followed suit. In that regard it's similar to speaking in tongues.

Group hypnosis, group think, they need something to feel. Maybe in their lives there has been no feeling so they get into a pentecostal situation where they can feel something. Maybe it is like people that cut themselves, they need to feel something.

Some people behave oddly in order to fit in to a group in which they want to belong.

People with severe learning difficulties do this sort of thing all the time.
