Let?s say you are right and atheism is a religion. Let?s also assume, for simplicity, that you?re a Christian.
You believe in the Christian God, and that belief is is a religion, so you have 1 religion.
You don?t believe in Aphrodite, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 2 religions.
You don?t believe in Vishnu, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 3 religions.
You don?t believe in Thor, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 4 religions.
You don?t believe in Osiris, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 5 religions.
You don?t believe in Zeus, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 6 religions.
You don?t believe in Shiva, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 7 religions.
You don?t believe in Odin, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 8 religions.
You don?t believe in Ra, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 9 religions.
You don?t believe in the Tooth Fairy, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 10 religions.
You don?t believe in the Easter Bunny, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 11 religions.
You don?t believe in the Invisible Pink Unicorn, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 12 religions.
You don?t believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 13 religions.
You don?t believe in the Abominable Snowman, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 14 religions.
You don?t believe in fairies, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 15 religions.
You don?t believe in elves, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 16 religions.
You don?t believe in or cs, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 17 religions.
You don?t believe in hobbits, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 18 religions.
You don?t believe in King Kong, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 19 religions.
You don?t believe in Godzilla, and that non-belief is a religion, so you have 20 religions.
What?s that? You don?t have 20 religions, only one, because non-beliefs are not religions?
Well, with atheists it?s the same, except that we don?t have even that one. We have zero religions.
Hey there, I hear the voice of God every time I pray. He claims to have chosen me to save this world and that I'm indeed reincarnation of Jesus. Pray to me.
Why do you not believe what i just said? even though that statement is just as true as claims that religious people make about how God is real. Can you disprove my statement?
I dint believe in god cause I cant see/hear him. You know, it kinda helps creditability of god if he/she/whatever just makes itself known. God is so fiction that it cant do anything.
Here let me say this. Human kind invented God for purposes of security blanket. because people are afraid of the unknown.

Religion should have phased out of existence centuries ago.
PS. disprove my statement and I'll follow OP to w/e religion the OP is.
Atheism is a religion only from a legal point of view, as it is a lack of belief in a deity that is constitutionally protected. From the perspective of your question, perhaps you should refer to it as a 'core belief' or something like that.
What makes me think that my lack of faith, my affirmation there is no god is the mutually incompatible qualities bestowed upon a god by the religions. God is supposed to be all-knowing and all-mighty, so when he would have made the universe, he would have known exactly of all the circumstances that would accumulated, over centuries, leading me to where I am now, inescapably. So that assumption of an all-knowing god is incompatible with free-will, as far as god's point of view is concerned.
So, I have no choice being who I turned out to be, and my lack of faith is the direct consequence of god's will. God make me an atheist.
Yet, he is supposed to be all loving, but will cast atheists (who have no control over their condition) to hell because they are how god made them.
Does this strike you as logical?
So, we have to reject an all-loving, all knowing and all mighty creator as something that is not possible.
