Why do atheists say no one has ever been killed in the name of atheism?

The death tolls produced by the atheist absolute powers of the 20Th century. In the name of creating their version of a religion-free utopia, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong produced this kind of mass slaughter. All together these atheists murdered more than 120 million people. There were other so called religious leaders doing harm also.

And many of the conflicts that are counted as religious wars were not fought over religion. They were mainly fought over rival claims to territory and power.

For starters, Hitler was Catholic, not atheist. Also, just because someone doesn't believe in god doesn't mean they won't ever be evil. They're people just like everyone else. EVERYONE has the capacity for evil.

When they killed people, they weren't thinking "I'm going to kill these people because I don't believe in deities".
They had their own twisted mentalities and ideologies that had nothing to do with the absence of belief in Gods. Also, Hitler was a Catholic.
Now think of all the crimes committed IN THE NAME of religion.

Since God is not a god of war but of peace, all wars and murders are done to spite God, even though they may say they are done for God.

Atheists have certainly killed people, but no one has murdered BECAUSE of atheism that I know of. As the other posters say, Hitler was not an atheist.

People kill other people. Atheists do it, Christians do it, people from all religions do it.

Atheism is lack of belief in a deity/deities. Nothing more, nothing less. Show me evidence that they killed in the name of lack of belief in deities.

They did not kill in the name of atheism. It was politics.

And Hitler and practically all of his worst most murderers henchmen were protestant or catholic.. Stalin was raised to be a catholic priest and Pol Pot was a Buddhist... but it doesn't even matter, religion, belief or lack of belief is irrelevant

This is too easy.. you religious people keep coming up with this example but fail every single time.

Because while people were killed in name of communism which included atheism as a tenet, the main factor was an economic system, and not a belief system. It would be like saying people were killed by Hitler in the name of theism, rather than in name of National Socialism. The Christianity of Hitler's program was secondary to his political and economic programs.

This is because religion has caused major bloodshed simply because they thought themselves better than others who weren't religious. Athiests haven't. Religious people killed for "God", while Athiests have no reason to.
