Most Buddhists do not view Buddha as a god. He was a man who had reached enlightenment - thus not a god to pray to but just a man they should aspire to become like.

There is not a 'Bible' in Buddhism but most, if not all, would agree that the major teaching of Buddhism is the Four Noble Truths along with the Eight fold path.

The four noble truths are :

1. Life is suffering
2. Suffering is caused by desire (I have also heard attachment instead of desire)
3. Suffering can be alleviated by avoiding desire (or seeking attachment)
4. Follow the eight fold path to achieve attachmentNTor lack of desire)

Eight fold path :

Right view/understanding
Right intention/aim
Right speech
Right action
Right livelihood
Right effort
Right mind fullness
Right concentration

There is a sect of Buddhism I believe it's called Mahayana that is religious Buddhism instead of philosophical and they do view Buddha as a god and worship him as thus though this is not the view of the majority of those who consider themselves Buddhist.

(this is what I wrote to answer another similiar question)

I would say the major theme is living a 'right' life by following the eight fold path to achieve enlightenment.

everyone has their view on Buddhism.... here is mine.
Buddhism is all about happiness, and that's all there is to it. The story be gain with a prince in Asia. Born a prince, and one day to be king, he will own everything and everyone under the sun in his kingdom. But the boy has got the blues, due to the "I know your pain syndrome". When he sees people in pain, he suffers. so he gave up everything and become a self-torturing monk. trying to absorb all the pain in the world onto himself like a sponge. Bahama, don't need me to tell you how that worked out. so the former prince got really upset, he sat under a tree and started to think of a way to relieve everyone pain and by doing so relieve his own pain. legend has it that he sits for 7x7 days straight. Finally, he gave up! he doesn't care anymore! and he is free of pain! so he share his wisdom to everyone he meet "don't care and there will be no pain! care about absolutely nothing and you will be absolutely at peace!" and it worked, and people called him Buddha.

there are of course other aspects of Buddhism. one is that of karma: do good and good will come back to you, same with bad. and you are born to suffer: 4 main pains- birth, aging, sickness, and death. 4 additional pains- parting with loved ones, being with hated ones, seek and not find or find and not get, and the never fulfilled needs of the body. which brings us to the last point- reincarnation: your soul will be endlessly recycled to suffer in different situations until you learn the truth of the prince. that God is all powerful and all is as he sees fit. so there is really nothing in the world for you to worry about, not even your own survival. know this, and your soul will join Budd in perfect peace, and not be reincarnated again. not as an angel(bud dist angels have a long life but will die of old age.) or devil(same with angels, have a life span.), or plant, or animal, or people rich and poor.

best thing about it is that it really helps people loosen up. there is no Lucifer to battle against.

ps: a monk once told me that I was a low-ranking devil in a previous life. ^_^
