Is Buddhism a viable option for an Atheist that believes in Science?
Of course I don't like religion, but the strength of the Buddhist monks surprises and impresses me. When I saw that monk burn himself alive and not flinch or even let out a tiny whelp in pain I was damn impressed. I want that sort of control, enlightenment, and ability to feel completely one with nature and to be able to control my own body to the feats in which they do. The closest I've been was while smoking weed, I really want to try LSD, but anyway, i want to be able to achieve it without chemicals. Even then I certainly couldn't burn alive without crying in miserable pain.
So what do you know about Buddhism and how can I find out if it is right for me? There isn't exactly any Buddish temples or whatever they go to around desperate this point in my life I am ready to commit suicide so I'm desperate for any solution for change and inner peace.
I don't care if' I'm not allowed to poop. Right now I'm too depressed to do any of those things. If inside my head their is clarity and peace I'm for it...
This sort of discipline is not specific to religion...you would probably be impressed by what the early Christians persecuted by the Romans could endure as well.
As a scientist you might have a hard time with various concepts in Buddhism such as reincarnation.
They are not strictly Atheist either, whatever some Buddhist wannabes might claim.
I am, to a degree, along the same lines as you are. Main difference is that I had done A LOT and I mean A LOT of LSD before I started exploring religions. Most have too many gaps, and unanswered questions in them for me to put faith into.
The fact that you've thought about committing suicide is, believe it or not, a good sign. It means that this world, and the society you live in, makes no sense to you. You wish to disown the life and society you were born into. I understand that. What you must understand, is that you are most likely not like everybody else. You ARE here for a reason, while most are just born into humanity.
Buddhism has many truths, but you must be willing to take the time to find those truths. Since it is not very popular in America, it is hard to practice Buddhism with-out some form of guidance. I can give you that guidance. If what you say is true, then you have nothing to lose, eh?
Email me at 024handle420@live.com I would be more then willing to help you. You'll sh*t a brick once you enter the fifth dimension for the first time ^^ it is better then LSD, I would know ha ha
Evan - Those are only Buddhist Monks, not Buddhists in general.
Most atheists can relate to alto of Buddha's writing, he also stopped believing in his families beliefs, you just cant help but agree with most things he says like "dint believe something just because it has been a tradition past down in your family" for example. But the religion of Buddhism is just full of its own none sense. Be a Buddhist by philosophy not by culture and belief.
