Zen Buddhism is not too popular in Vietnam. In fact, most Vietnamese, while officially claimed to be "Buddhists" are really ancestor worshipers like the Chinese.
In Vietnam, as in China, Buddhism was adopted as a religion centuries ago and there are temples everywhere but only the monks and nuns truly practice the religion. Most lay people do not practice it so much (they perform religious rituals on major events such as a funeral...) but otherwise are pretty secular. Buddhism, Theravada in particular, is practiced strongly in the other Southeast Asian lands such as Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Burma.
