I have noticed that atheists have a higher opinion of Buddhism, and some even practice it, than Hinduism which too claims to be a "philosophy" and not a religion.
Hinduism has that caste system they still use in India, and a lot of the atheists here are pasty white nerds who already love everything from Japan, so they're a bit biased.
In Hinduism, gods are an integral part of belief. Buddhism doesn't care if you believe in gods or not. And Buddhists aren't notorious for a prejudiced caste system.
You're getting the hippies from the 60s mixed up with the Atheists in modern society. No way in heck are the atheists of today hippies. Hippies were spiritual and most of them catered to Hinduism because of Ghandi.
Because Buddhism is a type of Atheism, since Buddhists don't believe in god. Also, try as I might, I can't think of any wars started by Buddhists, I may be wrong, however.
To the person above: Buddhism isn't from Japan, it's from India.
Buddhist, unlike Hinduism, is generally an Atheist religion. Atheists may also prefer Buddhism because it has more traits of being a philosophy than an actual religion.
Buddhism has a very solid and accessible philosophy attached to it, which makes it easy for an atheist to appreciate even if they aren't too interested in the more religious aspects. Hinduism (at least to this atheist) seems to be a rather complicated mess (1000s of gods, etc) with out a clear secular benefit.
1. you don't kill animals as sacrifices to gods - good for animal lovers; Ahimsa - non-aggression.
2. you get personal training techniques - good for those who want success in life: Sula, sadhu, Penna.
3. it only encourages to fight enemies within (greed, anger and ignorance) - good for world peace.
4. Karma (Kama) - it only teaches about good works and avoid bad works - this is pragmatism: to rely on oneself and smart hard-work with good intention is the only solution for life.
5. met ta - loving kindness; love everyone, treat good to everyone, respect everyone, don't harm anyone, it's the prayer for everyone to have good health, prosperity and success.
