Default Did Tibetan Buddhism allow serfdom and many atrocities to take place?

Wouldn't it be best to visit the Dalai Lama's new home in north India, Dharamsala? Or Bhutan, which basically has the same culture and religion as Tibet and the culture has remained intact especially because they do not allow many tourists?

some one told me the following, and I am wandering if it is true.

-_- obviously you never been to Tibet. I did last summer and people were never happier. In fact, they are really happier than most Chinese citizens in other provinces. Tourism and government funding from the Chinese government is helping Tibet to rebuild the rubbles and old houses as well as preserve some artifacts.

Why do you think Tibetans were so poor in the first place? The high priests and lords back in 1950 of theocratic feudal Tibet, or the "old free Tibet under Dali lama", made 90% Tibetans serfs. Yes, old Tibet, before China took control, was serfdom. I have seen historical documents, and old Tibetans, they tell a sad story of being in slavery to a corrupted theocracy where the rich and powerful took advantage of the poor. Everything was given to the Lords and Temple, people were chained up like animals. Old Tibet practice cruel punishment, including limb cutting.

So let me ask you, is that part of Tibetan history you want Tibetans to experience again? Years of humiliation at the hands of high priest and lord. Think twice before you answer because lies only insults the dead and victims still alive.

Yes, I understand from those who live in China, that tourism is allowed only since the Chinese government has started "staging" things for tourists, to mold the impressions the get. Only a fool believes everything they say at face value.

Your argument seems to be that China's occupation has 'given' the Tibetan populace its freedom.

But you cannot 'give' people freedom. If they do not claim it for themselves, it is worthless.

The US is just starting to discover this in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Maybe in a few more centuries even China will wise up.

Thank you for enlightening us Westerners. This Lama, the Deli Lama, comes to America, chanting His way through, putting spells on us, charming us, deceiving Americans into believing he is a nice guy. He does this to get our government to oppose the Chinese government. Personally, I think he is a deceiver. He wants something from America and he usually gets it because we are so unaware of historical records about this theocratic government. America needs to wake up!!!

Well, it is true that the old system WAS a Feudal one, indeed. Yes the Priests got the food from the peasant's hard labor- the cream of the crop.. (after all- priests/holy men are SPECIAL!!!!!) They did have a slavery system.

But it is sad that China came in.... that is just another cruel system.

In many ways the Dalai Lama is a fraud. Buddhism does not even condone his position and technically he is just famous for being famous.

i think you are someone who went to Tibet as a tourist. do you have any idea the other places where you were not allow to visit in Tibet? i have been there too as a medical health service to the very corner places in Tibet. it is like the time of middle age "even now"!! so the question is what china has done to Tibet when there is nothing changes?
what ever you think the change in those places where you have been is actually full of Chinese and Tibetan people are in the street begging. dint you see while you were there?

during the 40s 50s whole Asia were experience the same poor situation why blame only Tibet?

now whole Asia even bhutan has develope far much better then present tibet what do it mean?

60% of tibetan people are uneducated can you give me an explanation?

dont you think if tibetan government controls tibet could give better result than chinese goverment? there doesnt need to help to rebuilt anything, i has been done all by now.

slavery in those time was normal but it was far much betten than chinese slavery in china in those time. do you have any idea of slavery in china in the pass and in the present?

even now monasteries and lamas are taking care by tibetan people's free well. do you want to say that is also a slavery? these were the things you are talking no?

finally who the hell is china to take over tibet? where is penchen lama? no human right. there are lots of question to ask.
man you know nothing. i think simply you have a soft corner to china.

how many people were murdered in recent uprising? http://www.google.com.au/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=tibetan+uprising&ie= UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=AzgyTeDgLIS3cczilZoH

no media was allowed. no accountability.

how did the Tibetan defend their land when the Chinese invaded? http://www.google.com.au/images?client=safari&rls=en&q=tibet%20chinese%20in vasion&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1280&bih=681

and why do you use the line 'Tibet was freed from slavery' that is Chinese propaganda?
http://www.google.com.au/search?client=safari&rls=en&q='Tibet+was+freed+fro m+slavery'&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=rjgyTYyJIcercc7--KMH

I agree there was a system the world practiced. Tibet was culturally influenced by both China and India although it maintained its culture and also influenced Chinese culture. Both China and India had slave system - which Tibetans would believe a way of life. Politics is politics - it's hard to combine Buddhism and politics as they have separate directions. Hence, you don't have to agree with Tibetan politics of the past but you must support the independence of Tibetans - the independence they enjoyed. Democracy is the rule of law made by the representatives. People may choose their destiny and their version of culture and politics.

you don't have to support 'digitization'. http://www.google.com.au/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=tibetization&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=LToyTZ2eLMSXccmq6ewH that is how Tibet has been made into China.

Be aware of reality...

It is bunch of horse *** and so much misinformation; after the establishment of Empire of Han Dynasty, Chinese basically do away with Slavery, except those committed treason against the state may lost their citizenship and turn over to Nobles as servants. Before the Communist (which was an imported Western Idea), there weren't any slaves in China except three thousand years ago during the Feudal Lords system, China do have contracted labor system throughout most china?s history.

As to Dalai Lama 14Th, don?t blame him either, he simply has to follow his constituents? wishes as well as his two masters, US and Indian governments? bidding. All the negative propaganda of China are mostly the doing of CIA and American intelligent system, who wanted to keep US as world dominant power, as we American never got over with FDR?s concept of Big Stick, and to be the world police; and the idea of White Man?s Burden were never work out of our system.

CIA along with MR5 love to make China look bad, not that China?s records are pristine, but it was never as exaggerated as all the Western medias and Dalai Lama group made it out to be. People died during the riots, but do you know the numbers consist of mostly Han Chinese origin? Because a group of India borne Tibetans crossed border with weapons and start the mass killing of all people that looked like Chinese. Do you know there were incidents of native Tibetans sheltered and protected Han Chinese from Slaughtering during the riot?

Tibetan Serf system did not have their origin from China either, and even India did not have the real slavery system as oppose to common believe, the slave system was import during Islamic conquest and during European occupation ( for last 1,000 years +), notably those of British and Dutch or Prue 500 BCE, common Indian people do not have slaves.

Again the Western people are to be blamed for slave system, as European practiced the slavery well into the Industrial Revolution times, and revive it again in America during colonial time well into President Abe Lincoln and Civil war; and many years after the Civil War in the southern parts of America.

Furthermore, Tibet has more government subsidies than any other provinces in China by ten to twenty times with population less than 10% of most remote Han provinces; and even with special leniency with minorities like Tibetan who committed the crimes; whereas if the same crimes were committed by both Han Chinese and Minorities Chinese, most likely the Han Chinese can be executed, whereas Minorities Chinese go free with minimum punishment.

Aside from the main Central Tibet, most of the other areas claimed by Tibetans as Tibet are nothing other than their fragment of imagination, because during their legendary kings Songtsen Gampo and Trison Detsen, they ruled certain parts of previous Chinese Empire territory for 150 years due to Civil wars in China where one Chinese Empire in transition and in the process of replace another Empire. Most of these territories, the Tibetan are but a minority among minorities.

As to Pink Lil, where did you get the Tibet information from? If you talk about Prue 50- 60's, then all Chinese are just as poor as every other minority in China, same as every other Asian country. Today, the educational rate are way over 70% in Tibet, sometimes those poor families don't want their kids to go to school, because they have to help make a living for the family, but the laws made it illegal for any child under the age of 16 to not go to school. The only thing is that they have to choose either Chinese or Tibetan as their main language of learning, not bi-lingual with equal weight, but emphasis one over the other in Bilingual Education.

Furthermore, everyone talked about the revolt of Tibetans when Communist Army march into Tibet, do you know it was for defense of Tibet or show loyalty to the Republic of China of which Tibet as a part, a government had since retreated to Taiwan?

Do you guys know the original flag of Republic of China was five color bands as national flag? It signify five major ethnic tribes of China, and Tibetan being one of them?

Furthermore, there was only Six bullets were fired during that encounters, has anyone wondered why? Because to the Tibetans, the China army was still consider the Central government's army.
