Is it a good idea? How to put this...

Is putting cat sup on your french fries a good idea? It might satisfy you, but it's not necessary, and certainly won't satisfy everyone.

It doesn't have a direct effective relation to martial arts -- it doesn't make you more focused, but you might become more focused because you believe yourself to be. Any effect will be purely psychological.

If you want to study Buddhism, do so because Buddhism is something worthwhile in your life, not because you want it to make you better at something else. I come from a wealthy area where a lot of people I've known have lost fortunes in business dealings. And when they do, they go to church thinking, "If I'm just a good christian, God will bring wealth back into my life." They're going for deluded and selfish reasons -- not because they believe in or have a love for God, but because they want their money back. If you're going to join a temple to become a better martial artist, are you really any different?

It might be what you'd think is good, however I think it's just your ticket to hell. Religion is nothing to do with you and your performance in Martial Arts.

It is wrong to force a religion on others. Although understanding Buddism does help the student grasp the strategies behind Buhddist MAs.

It helps you become a better person and develop spirituality. Does not mean you have to be Buddhist to learn the Martial Arts, but most of the concepts are based on a lot of philosophies. I'm a Black Belt in Shorin Ryu Karate that emphasizes upon Shinto beliefs and a Red Sash in Shaolin Kung-Fu that has Buddhist beliefs. I love Taoism and I love studying other styles but it's up to you to decide.

Despite Western misconceptions, the two are not really connected.

Buddhism will help you in the sense that the best way to survive fights is to not seek them.
