Tibetan Buddhism is in the hand of the Tibetans. The people have the choice. Dalai Lama can empower them and teach them the right Tibetan Buddhism.
Even the Buddha Himself cannot protect Buddhism. Buddhism is in the hands of Buddhists. If people learn Buddhism, understand what the Buddha taught, and practice what they understand, then Buddhism will last. The Buddha said His Susana (Buddhism) will only last 5000 years - and now it's been almost 2600 years old. 2400 years to go. Again the Buddha said 'if people practice properly what He taught to them, then the world will never lack of Arahants (the enlightened)'.
So I don't mind if Dalai Lama can or cannot protect Tibetan Buddhism. The law of the nature is 'Anica, Gurkha and Anetta'.
