The swastika's Indian name comes the Sanskrit word avast, meaning good fortune, luck and well being. In Buddhism, the swastika signifies auspiciousness and good fortune as well as the Buddha's footprints and the Buddha's heart.
The symbol is even older than Buddhism and Hindu and was even used in native American culture. I don't think they took it for any reason intentionally unless it was an effort to communicate its original meanings of life, strength and good luck;
The swastika is at least 3000 years old and even predates the Hank. the boy scouts used to give the Order of the White swastika as a badge. It took the Nazis about 12 or so years to pervert this symbol
Yes, originally a symbol from the far east.
The difference between the Nazi swastika and the Buddhist swastika is the direction of the symbol:
the Buddhist swastika points or opens in a counter-clockwise direction, while the Nazi swastika "points" or "opens" in a clockwise direction (like a mirror image)
