Default About Christianity: the Bible: What is the Law?

There is a section in the Bible called the Law, but what is it? what is the point of the Law? Can you explain? Does the 10 Commandments= The Law or is it just part of the Law?

Christians are not under old law.
Keeping the law negates the death of Jesus.
Jesus said to love God and your neighbor.
Do things truly from the heart.
The reason Jesus did not push the law
was because the laws were enforced
by those who could not even keep it
themselves, Jesus called them hypocrites.
The NEW testament says if you try to live
by the law and break one point, you are guilty
of all. But Jesus set us free from the law.
Now who in their right mind would want to live
under strict laws when they can be free from it.
Sorta like sharia law, why would anyone want
to live that way. Live right because you want to,
not because you have to.
- I have to add that I would NOT want to uphold the law.
Upholding the law would mean that I would have to
stone people to death, have an eye for an eye attitude
which is totally against what Jesus said..forgive,
make blood sacrifices, again negating the death of Jesus,
and follow a strict list of rules for Sabbath that would be very difficult to keep,
(and no it doesn't mean go to church on Sunday.)
Not to mention strict dietary laws and keeping feast days,
I'll stick with Jesus.

When they say the law, they usually mean the law that God gave to Moses to give to the Jewish nation at Mount Sinai.
Here are some of the scriptures from the new testament.

Romans 6:14...For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace

Romans 8:2...For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 10:4...For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believer.

The Law, contained within the Pentateuch, is the character of God. It reveals truth about His holy and righteous nature, and rightly names sin for what it is - that is, a violation of the character of God. It contains the Ten Commandments, but also a lot of other various things for every day life.

Paul, in Romans, explains the Law as contrasting our filthy, sinful condition with the perfect character of God. That being said, Paul continues on to show that through Christ, we are dead to sin and the Law (making Jesus the best loophole ever!).

So are we to disregard the Law and break all the commands just because we are no longer cursed under it? By no means! Jesus says that the greatest commandment is love God with everything you have (Matthew 22). The true Christian will naturally uphold the Law (even though he doesn't have to perform it for salvation) because he loves God more than anything and the Law is God's true character.

Hope that helps

The law can refer to the first 5 books of the old testament or it can refer to the legalities of the law; the points of law in that old covenant.

Context usually indicates which is being addressed.
