What would you ask a lifelong atheist who recently converted to Christianity?
I'm no sheltered science denier, either. I used to flaunt my lack of faith all over this forum back in the day. For a while it felt weird being on the other side, but at least it allowed me to look at secularists more objectively.
To get this out of the way, I did it for a variety of reasons: psychosocial, motivational, inspirational, and otherwise. I'd have to type up half a novel to adequately explain it, but it obviously wasn't because I found scientific evidence for God's existence.
Koufax: Yes, very much so. Thank you, I really appreciate it.
Soleil: I remember you! I used to use the alias Jared, if you can recall. Anyway, sorry, no tangible evidence, like I mentioned in my question. Sorry to disappoint, but you really would've seen it coming. :P
TheKitten: Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt. Some of my atheist pals assume I'm going to start rejecting science left and right. I'm just like, what? I already know evolution is true: I can't randomly decide it's a hoax from Satan.
James: It's hard to say without accidentally offending people. But when you switch sides, for real, you become more aware of the subtle flaws present in your former group. When I was an atheist, I couldn't stand hardcore fun dies. Now, as a Christian, I'm occasionally taken aback by some of the horrible blasphemies uttered nonchalantly by nonbelievers (which I can understand, but wow, it's just hard-hitting).
?: I feared death as an atheist, and I still do in some ways, but now I can truly accept it. I'm not sure how often this trend holds true for people who convert, but that's just been my experience.
Nihil: The second one. It can, in fact, happen.
Studying Engineering: Well in all fairness, nobody is forcing you to convert. I can sympathize, though. I wish I could produce some evidence, but that's just not how it works.
WellTraveledProg: You're right. What I've gotten out of religion would've come from somewhere else, that's completely true. But that's not what it's all about. I know you like to think of God as an imaginary sky daddy, but I hope you can learn to accept the fact that lots of people don't. You'll be a lot better off.
I would first say, I can't tell you how relieved I am for you. Secondly I would ask if you have found a good church and found a good bible study, as this will open your eyes to great and mighty things of God.
How does it feel to know the Savior
How does it feel to know you are going to heaven
How does it feel to understand the Bible
How does it feel to have Holy Spirit direction
How does it feel to know the grace and love of God
psychosocial, motivational and inspirational are in my opinion not valid arguments for believing in something. So i would ask you "do you REALLY believe a Jewish guy rose from the dead to saves us from his rules, leaving no evidence behind?"
So you acknowledge there's no evidence for a god, yet you decided to believe in one...because you were lonely ("psychosocial" reasons) or lacked motivation?
Whatever.
Believe what you want to, I don't care. As long as you don't start claiming your beliefs are "true facts," or try to legislate them, it's none of my business. I'll just point out that it seems pretty clear that what you were looking for from religion could be found elsewhere, without having to fall back on imaginary magical gods. But hey, if it works for you, great. Enjoy.
Jeremiah 29:11 (New International Version, ?2011)
11 For I know the plans I have for you,? declares the LORD, ?plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
This scripture is on the wall of the scientist's office who discovered dinosaur soft tissue, Mary Schweitzer. She's a Christian who believes in evolution too and although I believe in Creation, it really doesn't matter, as long as we have our belief in Jesus Christ in common.
I had to see if there was anything in this . . . FEAR . . it's the only thing that could drive one into the arms of an imaginary space chap pie.
Sanity and security wouldn't drive you there.
Sad . . . pathetic.

Now you have an idea what Saul was thinking on his way to Damascus just after he fell to the ground. When the light of the Lord shown around him. Acts Chapter 8 verse 26 and of course you should read on most importantly Chapter 9
