I have an issue with this, too. Jesus did not die on the cross to make those who believe in him wealthy. I am not saying that God can't prosper his people.
However, it is important to note that Jesus was poor. He said it well when he said this: "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." Matt 8:20
When Apostles Peter and John were about to enter the temple called Beautiful they were met by a crippled beggar who asked them for money. Peter replied. "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." It is important to note that the crippled beggar was given something much more valuable than money--he was healed of his disease/condition. Finally, Apostle Paul who came from a prestigious background (remember he was formerly a Pharisee who seen early Christians martyred) said the following; "But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity. Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ[a] who strengthens me. " Philippians 4:10-13
It is sad that this is going on, if Christians actually read the bible they would know that God is more interested their hearts and that they truly live for him, than making them wealthy. Spiritual blessings far out way material blessings. After all when a christian dies, they can't take any of that stuff with them--it is all temporal. Also, it is important to note that in a lot of poor countries there is such hardships and things blocking the distribution of wealth (Corrupt Gov'ts and leaders for example). I just don't buy into this God wants to make you rich teaching. It is a warped and selfish gospel. If God wanted everyone who believe him to be rich, than all of the Apostles and early followers mentioned in the N.T. would be rich (instead many were poor, persecuted, and martyred). If God embraced this message than wouldn't Jesus himself would have came to earth as a king or something of that caliber rather than the child of a poor carpenter and his young wife.
Thank you for asking this question.
