Cmon. I'm an atheist and even I know the answer to this question.
What Jesus is talking about is that the road to Christianity is not going to be easy. I you are willing to call yourself a christian it is going to be a struggle. People will look down on you, your family will look down on you, your friends will look down on you.
Life doesn't become peaches and creamer just because you found your savior, next you have to spread his message and there are people out there who don't want to hear it (like you and me).
Did you ever go to church when you were a little kid?
OMGOMG I actually learned about this passage.
So what Jesus meant was that he's bringing the news to us. The news is that those who do not believe will be condemned to gnashing of teeth (u know what i mean).
And whoever told you that Christianity spreads love and peace is wrong. That was never what Jesus was trying to do. Jesus was trying to give the message to us and tell us to make a choice whether to believe in him and gain salvation or not. Of course there will be conflict from this. In other words, yes Jesus loves us and we should show the same love to others; however, this is like the fatherly love that requires discipline if you do not put Ur trust in the Lord, which is where the sword comes in.
Jesus was not a real person, and the person playing Jesus is the one that made the remark that you referred to. He was a Roman general among many other things and office that he held. He was with Titus in year 70CE when they destroyed the temple. And yes, he did bring a sword as he killed many Judeans by provoking them into wars.
Though Jesus is the Prince of Peace, His reasoning to come here on Earth was not to bring peace, because he knew that by using the Sword of the Spirit(The Word of God), there would be people opposed to it and confrontational about it. He spoke an authority when preaching the Gospel, and wasn't concerned about whether the Truth offended people and disrupted the peace, but He did speak and act in love. prime example of how we should be, not timid to share the Gospel because we might get people in an uproar but in a loving way.
So can anyone explain to me why Jesus said: "I come not to bring peace, but to bring a sword" (Gospel of Matthew 10:34).
That of the Rider. Jesus provides us the sword. Everything he said, did, and inspired (like the NT) was him giving us all the weapons we need against the original source of all sin. THe original sin was Eve believing in the lie that there was not a God who would care. THe entire Bible is one big sword of God saying "I care". You reap someone when you absorb the deity of the Rider. When you do as the Rider does, faithful and true, and throw the false prophet into the lake of fire, you are fighting the Rider's fight. You are preaching his ministry. You are filled with the spirit and you let the sword fly.

Rather preachy but let us see if you can think.
You call Eve the source of sin.
What was the talking snake and did it not sin first?
That or Satan in heaven before being cast to earth to pester Adam and Eve.
Rather like God putting the fox in the hen house but then, God shows himself to be a poor parent in Eden from the get go.
