I see a lot of biased answers here that aren't necessarily based on historical truths and not quite answering the question. You want to know why there are many different denominations? Well, you remember that Jesus had disciples right? After Jesus was crucified the disciples went to all the corners of the world spreading the word about Jesus coming (that the Messiah had come). Each founding their own sect of Christianity. For instance: St. Peter founded Catholicism in Rome (Martyred by Nero in 60 A.D.), St. Mark founded Coptic Orthodox Christianity in Egypt, etc etc. Each disciple promoted their worship of Jesus in their own form, that is the reasoning for the many different forms of religion.
When it comes to Baptists and Lutherns and such, their Apostle was also St. Peter, but these people split from the Catholic Church as soon as Martin Luther started the reformation in the 1500's.
Hope this helps!
