Confucianism was a philosophy which arose in China approximately 2600 years ago, teaching all members of society to accept their social status and respect the authority of each succeeding higher status. In imperial times from late Zhou Dynasty through the Qing all education and training was in line with Confucian doctrine. Mao rejected all aspects of Confucian philosophy, insisting that Marxist political theory, rather than Confucian philosophy, be the guiding principle of Chinese society.
