It was more a political guideline for the social class than it was a religion.

There is no deity, no dogma, no rituals. It does not conform to the western idea of religion but you have to understand that the eastern mind doesn't distinguish between mind, body, and soul; they are all interconnected and interdependent so philosophy, religion, and medicine were all interconnected and intertwined as well.
