Unitarian Universalism vs. Confucianism... Aren't they the same?
I'm a Confucian and the main teachings are: The purpose of life is to fulfill ones role in society with propriety, honor, and loyalty. And practices are: Honesty, politeness, propriety, humaneness, perform correct role in society, loyalty to family, nation. They allow you to believe in anything you would like for a deity and an afterlife or anything else....
Unitarian universalism main teachings are: Salvation is "spiritual health or wholeness." Members seek "inner and outer peace," insight, health, compassion and strength. And practices are: Ceremonies for marriages, funerals, etc. Church services have elements from various religions. Emphasis on civil rights, social justice, equality and environment. Most UUs are anti-death penalty and pro-gay rights.
So isn't UU just Confucianism with a church thing you can go to?
No i read about Confucionism. What I read was Confucionism is a lot like the OT in Christianity. My source is the Te of piglet. I dint like monotheistic religions, they re all about hate that calls itself love.
coral taxi, look whose talk in, Christianity is Buddhism, Paganism Judaism Zoroastrianism and Mithra's. Ignorant twit.
In Confucianism, Rena AI (benevolence) is placed above yo (righteousness). Benevolence guides and dictates a person's conduct, as it is the compassion and love for fellow humans and combine it with yo (righteousness) to do what is right.
Do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you.
To benefit or prosper, you must make sure others benefit or prosper.
These are different in perspective from UU, for in doing anything, Confucianism emphasis es not to focus too much on oneself, but to consider that others would benefit from it. Confucianism emphasis es a lot on collective responsibility.
Confucianism differs from UU in another aspect. It is not a religion. It is a philosophy, and is expounded as a way of life for proper moral conduct and social etiquette. It, too, expounds ones role and responsibility in a nation, towards society, towards family, towards elders and peers and friends and subordinates.
No, they aren't the same thing. UU's have no set creed, but study many different creeds and "doctrines". The basics you gave here, I can show is in Paganism. But that doesn't make UU or Confucianism pagan. Same idea applies here.
No; different traditions, different heritages, different user base, so to speak.
If you are a Confucian, though, in the USA, you'd be more comfortable (and more welcome) in a UU congregation than in any other place I can think of, assuming there isn't a Confucian, Buddhist or Taoist temple in your county.
Unitarian-Universalism, although originally coming from Christianity, is somewhat like Confucianism in that it is based on a set of principles rather than a doctrine or creed. One of those principles recognizes that our truth comes from a multitude of Religious and Ethical Systems, Confucianism being one of them. The difference is not only in cultural origin (Confucianism being Chinese, UU coming from 2 Christian denominations) but Confucianism makes no pretense at being a religion -- it is an ethical system.
