When the great Ch'an master Hui-hai was asked if Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism were separate teachings, his insightful reply was:Employed by men of great capacity they are the same. As understood by men of limited intellect, they differ. All of them spring forth from the functioning of the one self-nature whether a man remains deluded or gains illumination depends upon himself, not upon differences or similarity of doctrine (Dalia 1987: 150). ------
