Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, What Are Good Books?

I'm looking for some books that do an excellent job breaking down and explaining all three of these? Would somebody please give me some recommendations?

Well, I am a Christian, but one book I really enjoy on Confucianism is The Analects of Confucius: A Philosophical Translation by Ames and Rosemont. The introduction is 60 pages long, very readable, and stimulating. Hope that helps.

[edit] Okay, another book on Buddhism you might like is What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula. It is also very good and my copy is full of underlining. Both of these books were part of a course I took taught by a Ph.D student in Eastern Religion at University of Chicago.

To really know one must go beyond the explanations but books are a very good way to start. Try looking around on the web at first or maybe check some out at the library. ~ : )

Confucianism is a moral code and philosophy of behavior. The Analect of Confucius is the main source for this and one of the five Anelects that were required to know to pass the public service test in ancient china.

Taoism is a philosophy and the primary sources will be Lao Tsu and Chung Tzu. It is difficult to find anything on Chung Tzu but it is easy to find Lao Tzu "Tao Te Ching" or "The Way". There are also some other stuff you can find in Chinese studies on other Taoist such as the Forest Philosiphers.

Buddhism is also a philosophy and has many many different flavors based on where it is coming from geographically. Within the context of your question we will assume that we are talking the Chines flavor. In this case my personal favorite is the Platform Sutra which is the fundamental text of Chan and Zen Buddhism. Chan Buddhism is the closest to a Buddhist version of Taoism. Other text to consider are the "Diamond Sutra" or the "Awakening of Faith".
