Default Please discuss the split within the Eastern Orthodox church regarding icons.?

Please explain icons, schism, and iconoclasts.
For this unit we have to find stuff on the Internet and the teacher said we could use sites like this because he wants it to be a quick unit.
Not too in depth just, well, a summary of what went on thanks.

This is news to me. I was not aware of a split within the Eastern Orthodox church regarding icons.

The Orthodox and Catholic Churches were one and the same until they separated from one another in 1054 mainly over the role of the Pope.

There are very few theological differences. The main difference is that the Orthodox Churches (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11329a.htm) use the Byzantine Rite (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04312d.htm) and the Catholic Church use the Roman or Latin Rite.

Another difference is the Filioque clause in the Nicene Creed, the original which the Orthodox follow is
"And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father."
And the Catholic revision is:
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filioque

Pope John Paul II said of the Orthodox Churches in Orientale Lumen, "A particularly close link already binds us. We have almost everything in common."

For the entire document, see: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_letters/documents/hf_jp-ii_apl_02051995_orientale-lumen_en.html

With love in Christ.

In brief; there were those who, in the eighth and ninth centuries, who took the Commandment in Exodus of graven images to the extreme, ignoring that later in the same book, God commands Moses to put depictions of the Seraphim (angels) on the Mercy Seat. This led to the banning of icons being used under certain Byzantine Emperors (notably Leo III the Isaurian, and their destruction was ordered. Many Byzantines rejected this, among the most prominent St John of Damascus, who famously was quoted "I do not worship creation over the Creator".
Upon Leo's death, icon use was restored by the Empress Irene (his widow) who organized the Second Council of Nicea in 787. This was in response to the banning of icons by her late husband, and made the distinction in theological terms between veneration and worship.
There was another period of iconoclasm (banning) in the ninth century initiated by Leo V. This was not as rigorously enforced, and eventually rescinded by Theodora the Iconodule, Empress regent upon the death of Theophillius.

There was a century-long, sometimes bloody period in the Eastern Roman Empire called the "Iconoclastic Period". There had risen a feeling among some that icons (images of saints and holy events) were being used as idols (or could be so used), and that they needed to be forcibly removed from use and destroyed. "Iconoclast" means "image/icon destroyers". These feelings were influenced by Islam, which by that time had taken over part of the Eastern Roman Empire; Islam forbids images.

The iconoclasts were finally officially overcome at the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which proclaimed for all Orthodox Christianity:
"We define that the holy icons, whether in color, mosaic, or some other material, should be exhibited in the holy churches of God, on the sacred vessels and liturgical vestments, on the walls, furnishings, and in houses and along the roads, namely the icons of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, that of our Lady the Theotokos, those of the venerable angels and those of all saintly people. Whenever these representations are contemplated, they will cause those who look at them to commemorate and love their prototype. We define also that they should be kissed and that they are an object of veneration and honor (Dimitri prognosis), but not of real worship (Latrena), which is reserved for Him Who is the subject of our faith and is proper for the divine nature, ... which is in effect transmitted to the prototype; he who venerates the icon, venerated in it the reality for which it stands."

Orthodox understanding of the use of icons to this day is guided by this statement. They are not worshiped and are not idols, but they are venerated and honored, with the honor going to the one depicted there, not to the image itself.

The renunciation of iconoclasm is commemorated yearly in the Sunday of Orthodoxy, the first Sunday of Lent.

Blessings.
