Default Can someone answer some questions about Eastern Orthodoxy?

I'm really curious. I'm sorry if these are stupid questions.

Do Orthodox Christians "go to church" on Sunday?

Do they have like a "service"?

What do they typically do while attending a service?

Did the Protestant Reformation have anything to do with Orthodoxy?

Thanks...sorry if these questions are strange.

Their services resemble Catholic services, and the Great Schism was only directed toward the Catholic (original) Church.

I'm not Orthodox, I'm Catholic, but I think I can answer these questions.

Yes, Orthodox go to church on Sunday.

They have a Mass. It's valid, in the eyes of Catholics, but it's also schismatic, and Catholics may not attend.

They're service is just like the Byzantine Rite of Mass in the Catholic Church. They say prayers, change bread and wine in to Christ's body and blood, and then go to Communion.

The Protestant Reformation had very little if anything to do with the Orthodox. Neither one is Catholic, but they're both "not Catholic" for different reasons entirely.

Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism were the same church -- simply called the "Catholic Church" -- for over 1000 years. Externally, they are very much the same -- Sunday Mass (EO call in the Divine Liturgy) is standard. The focus of the service is Jesus Christ, and receiving him in the Eucharist (communion). The services contains many prayers and much singing, and the reading of an epistle and gospel lesson; there is generally a short sermon.

Roman Catholicism split from the Church by adding to the received teachings; Protestantism split from the Roman Church by removing teachings and scriptures. Unfortunately, the Protestants didn't remove what the Romans added, and so is even more different from Orthodoxy than Roman Catholicism is. The Protestant Reformation was several hundred years after the EO/RC split.

Blessings.

1. yes, we do. and also you can attend the church whenever you want, on Sunday there is divine liturgy, which main purpose is that bread and wine transform into body and blood of Christ and believers receive them, for heal Thor souls.
Eucharist is union with god. It?s not symbolic, it?s mystical and like other sacraments, the Eucharist can be done by bishops and priests, with special prayers, when bread and wine transforming into body and blood of Christ. (sacraments aren't created by Orthodox. they are created by god. and gave blessing to apostles to materialize them, and apostles - to priests and bishops. sacraments are ancient, you can read in acts or in Epistles of Apostles, but protestants deny them)
The apostles received the first Eucharist from Jesus Christ on The Lord's Supper.
?? Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.?? ( from John 6:53)

2.
there are different services. the main is liturgy.

3.
they pray of course and this prayer has much big power, than when you pray alone, because you worship with many people, with them you are united in christ. brothers and sisters in Christ worship Jesus, and he is unvisibly among them
(''For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.? mat. 18:20)

4.
no, protestantism was against catholic church and it was born in schism of Roman church, not in Orthodox church, because of crimes of Catholic hierarchs. yes, protestants were against these crimes, BUT they created new and foreign doctrines for Christianity, created their own churches, which arent built by Christ, and started to teach blesephemous teachings.
their theology is very low.
Martin Luther wanted relationtip with Orthodox and he sent letter to Patriarch of Constantinople, but Patriarch didnt agreed, because he denied holy dogmas and had new and foreign doctrines and catechism for Christianity.

P.S
Maria S. actually the roman church is in schism, because they added fillioque to creed, and they started to use other creed. yes, many saints believed in Fillioque BUT it wasnt officially proved by whole church, so it was very big mistake to add Fillioque in Creed, when it was forbidden on the third ecumenical council to add or remove words in creed, especially when the Fillioque wasnt proved officially.
also we say that Pope was first among equals, BUT your views are valid canonically.
than for catholics added popes infabillty. it is foreign for the church, because there wasnt such speech about popes infabillty, infallible are only councils, and we are sure that 100% infallible are only ECUMENICALS.
also you added purgatory, Marian dogmas, Original sin, ''pay a dept to god'' and etc...

so come and recive grace in ORIGINAL and APOSTOLIC church, which is waiting for all of us

- Yes, we go to church on Sunday, or believe you should, to receive Holy Communion. We receive Holy Communion every Sunday, unlike other Christian denominations, among other differences I won't get into right now...
- We have lots of different kinds of services, the main, Sunday morning service is known as the "Divine Liturgy". On weekdays there is an evening service called "Vespers", though times and days when this service is done, and whether there will be a special version varies on the time of year and parish. And there are many other services too, for all the feast days and other church holidays.
- At a service, typically we will sing, say written prayers as well as your own if you wish, light candles for loved ones as well as yourself, kiss icons, and listen to readings. Depending on the service, parish, and time of year, we also may prostrate, do a procession, ring bells, receive Holy Communion, have things blessed by a priest and kneel. There are other traditions that may be done also, depending on the country of origin and holiday. We cross ourselves many times at every service, every time the words "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit" are said, in other words every time the Trinity is invoked. At an Orthodox service in an Orthodox church, you will see beautiful icons and decorations, hear the hymns being sung/chanted and bells, smell the incense, taste of Holy Communion, and of course feel the different textures. In other words, we use each of our five senses in our worship. All of our songs, hymns and chants are in A Capella, or with out any instruments, just voice.
- The Protestant Reformation did not have anything to do with Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
