Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism split during the Great Schism that is conventionally dated to 1054, although it was in fact a gradual process rather than a singular event, exacerbated by cultural and linguistic divisions between the Greek-speaking East and the Latin-speaking West. A number of Eastern Christian communities are in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church; these are referred to as Eastern Rite Catholic Churches.
The formal name of the Eastern Orthodox church is the Orthodox Catholic Church. Eastern Orthodoxy is the largest single religious denomination in Russia, Greece, Cyprus, Georgia, Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and many nations in Eastern Europe, but there are also large Orthodox communities in Africa, Asia, North America, South America and Australia.
The Eastern Orthodox cross is different with a small crossbar at the top that represents the sign ordered by Pontius Pilate stating Jesus Christ King of the Jews. There is also a small diagonal crossbar at the bottom which has different meanings. So altogether there are three crossbars on the Eastern Orthodox cross.
The Orthodox Church has always allowed married priests and deacons, provided the marriage takes place before ordination.
