I know some fundamentals of Hindu and Buddist faiths. The "church" in the East that consider themselves "orthodox" are much the same as their Western counterparts. Otherwise they are known as Mosques, Temples, and such. Can you refine your question a little?

Sorry I don't understand.

It occurred when the church got divided in two parts because the two principal patriarchs (the church was ruled by 5 of them a long time ago) had a disagreement. That's what created the terms Roman Catholic (West of Europe) and Orthodox (East). Before that there were no protestants, Anglicans, catholics, orthodox, etc... they were all one. After some centuries the Roman Catholic church accepted them back but many still continued being the Orthodox church.

One of the reason of the disagreement was that the patriarch of Rome (the Pope) was claiming to rule over the other patriarchs (where 4 bishops of other cities). Also because of the difference of cultures and languages their traditions became different. Romans had mass in Latin. Orthodox had them in Greek.

As far as I know, the main difference between Catholic and Orthodox is their understanding of the Holly Spirit (which I don't understand very well)

IMHO they are brothers who married different sisters ; ) they have the same background etc. the same lineage. however the Eastern orthodox maintains some slight differences.
while their priests can't date, if they are married prior to their being ordained - they can be married (but i believe they stay priests and can't climb the hierarchical ladder). Catholics can only be married if they were married and ministers, reverends, etc in another denomination and converted to Rcc.
their altars are set as back in the old testament with only the priest going to the Holy of Holies. in the Rcc the only area truly off limits in the tabernacle when Christ is present.
women are not to cross their legs or nave bare shoulders (old old school highly enforced).
they do not "obey" the Vatican - yet they over see most of the Cathlic churches in the Holy Land and even in Rome itself!
God Bless!!

To summarize wipedOA
Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism split during the Great Schism that is conventionally dated to 1054, although it was in fact a gradual process rather than a singular event, exacerbated by cultural and linguistic divisions between the Greek-speaking East and the Latin-speaking West. A number of Eastern Christian communities are in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church; these are referred to as Eastern Rite Catholic Churches.

The formal name of the Eastern Orthodox church is the Orthodox Catholic Church. Eastern Orthodoxy is the largest single religious denomination in Russia, Greece, Cyprus, Georgia, Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and many nations in Eastern Europe, but there are also large Orthodox communities in Africa, Asia, North America, South America and Australia.

The Eastern Orthodox cross is different with a small crossbar at the top that represents the sign ordered by Pontius Pilate stating Jesus Christ King of the Jews. There is also a small diagonal crossbar at the bottom which has different meanings. So altogether there are three crossbars on the Eastern Orthodox cross.

The Orthodox Church has always allowed married priests and deacons, provided the marriage takes place before ordination.

Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox have some differences on these issues which you can look up in wikipedia by following the links on the main page listed below as a source.

Apophaticism - Filioque clause
Miaphysitism - Monophysitism
Nestorianism - Panentheism
Theosis
