What are the differences in the view of Mary and her role in Salvation and in the Church. How and why does the West treat Mary as it does, and why is the Eastern view different? How are they different?

The Eastern Orthodox communities and (by extension) the Eastern Catholic Churches (all in communion with Rome, by the way) place far more emphasis on the Mary's role in salvation and in their respective liturgies. I do not find this to be bad at all (I'm Roman Catholic). Eastern Orthodox/Catholics focus more on spirituality while Catholicism focuses more on the philosophical and "practical". For example, we Catholics call our worship service "Mass" from the Latin Missa (from dismissal) while the Orthodox and Eastern Catholics call it the Divine Liturgy -- more of a sense of the majesty and transcendence of God.

Would that world Protestantism would join themselves to our great love of Mary. More and more Protestants are discovering Mary and are now praying the Rosary -- which is a meditation of the Gospels.

There are many similarities because both Catholics and Orthodox have great devotion to Mary.

The forms of devotion have developed a bit differently in East and West. For example, in the West, we have the devotion of the Rosary prayer, but this is not common to the East. They have, instead, the famous Akathist hymn in honor of Mary. There are other things too, but there is great agreement in doctrine.

Orthodoxy does not have such an emphasis on suffering -- ours, Mary's, Christ's -- as being an important component of salvation. Nor does Orthodoxy have a component pushing to declare Mary co-radiometric with Jesus because of the amount of her mental anguish during the crucifixion of Jesus.

Orthodox call the blessed virgin Mary "Theotokos" -- the mother of God (better, the one who gave birth to God), that is, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh. Salvation came through her and her willingness to submit to God, and we honor her for those things. But Christ's atonement does not need to be augmented by our suffering to make it effective.

Blessings.
