The Coptic Church is a splinter group from when the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic church were one group.
In essence, every Christian church that exists is in some way an "illegitimate" child of the Roman Catholic Church. Even newer groups like the LDS Church and the Jehovah's Witnesses are outgrowths of the Protestant movement, which splintered from the Catholic Church.
