Eastern Orthodox Christianity is the original form of Christianity, as Christ left us the Church He came to earth to establish with His Apostles. It has remained unchanged for all these years, down through every age and generation. It is the only Christian faith that can rightly claim to contain absolutely NO man made parts. Every other form or practice of Christianity, although based on Christ, which is a good thing, contains some element of human change. The Christians in the eastern world, when faced with the first changes brought into Christianity (in the western civilized world of the time, IE Rome in about the year 1000 roughly) the Christians in the eastern part of the civilized world told Rome it could not make any man made changes. Rome refused to repent of trying make man made changes. At that time, Christians became known as either believing what was added in Rome, or Roman Catholic, and the Christians in the eastern world were known as Eastern Orthodox Christians---because they were geographically east, and because they were known to keep the "or tho" or true and correct "docs" or doctrine or teaching. The absolute hallmark of Orthodox Christianity is that it does not allow ANY man made changes at all to creep in. For humans to say the we humans have to "fix" what Jesus Christ came to give us for our salvation is a bad thing to do. The Orthodox Christians will never assume God got it wrong and that we have to "fix" what God got wrong. We preserve the faith as Jesus Christ gave it to us...totally unchanged from it's original form. When you go to an Orthodox Church today, you would be visiting the same kinds of services, with the same structure as those services the Apostles attended when they were alive. There are many many people who have no idea what Orthodox Christianity is, or that it was and still is the form of the Church Jesus Christ Himself gave to us while He was on earth. Good question

Peter was the first bishop of Antioch (Orthodox Patriarchate), book of ACTS says that "They were first called Christians at Antioch". When peter went to Rome (Orthodox Patriarchate for 1054 years), Paul took head of the Antiochian Church, while James, Jesus' brother, was the first bishop of Jerusalem (Orthodox Patriarchate).

Catholics believe in one man (Pope) having the ability to change the Doctrine of the Church, Orthodox do not allow the Doctrine to be changed by man, nor do they recognize the Authority of the Pope, that is why the Catholic Church is so corrupted with pedophilia and Freemasonry, while the Orthodox Church has suffered 2,000 years of martyrdom, sainthood and persecutions from the Crusades, Muslims, Nazi's, Communists, etc, etc, etc.

First of all Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox are both Catholics. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes the Pope (first bishop) as being the Apostolic Authority of the Church. The Eastern Orthodox do not acknowledge the Pope as being the Apostolic Authority of the Church. Then there is the matter of Roman Catholic Priest, Monks, Nuns, etc. not being allowed to be married. The Eastern Orthodox do allow Priest to be married, with the exception of their Monks who are not allowed. Then there is also the issue of the Deutercanonical Books within their Bibles, the Eastern Orthodox has a couple more books (the books vary from one Orthodox denomination from the other). Then there is the other matter that Eastern Orthodox considers the crucifix to be idol worshiping, the Orthodox cross is very plane with no image of Jesus on it. I also believe the Eastern Orthodox to be stricter with their dogmas then with the Roman Catholic Church. That's why the Roman Catholic Church's parishioners are more vast in numbers then the Old School Orthodox.

The Orthodox and Catholic Churches were one and the same until they separated from one another in 1054 mainly over the role of the Pope.

There are very few theological differences. The main difference is that the Orthodox Churches (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11329a.htm) use the Byzantine Rite (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04312d.htm) and the Catholic Church use the Roman or Latin Rite.

Another difference is the Filioque clause in the Nicene Creed, the original which the Orthodox follow is
"And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father."
And the Catholic revision is:
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filioque

Pope John Paul II said of the Orthodox Churches in Orientale Lumen, "A particularly close link already binds us. We have almost everything in common."

For the entire document, see: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_letters/documents/hf_jp-ii_apl_02051995_orientale-lumen_en.html

With love in Christ.

The Eastern Orthodox faith, whether Greek, Russian, Romanian, or a number of other expressions, is one faith, one Church. Orthodoxy is often characterized as those Christians in communion with the Patriarch of Constantinople, rather than with the Pope of Rome.

The Holy Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church and the Roman Catholic Church were one Church for the first millennium of Christianity, so there are many similarities. Common to both are most of the points of the Nicene Creed (http://www.goarch.org/chapel/liturgical_texts/creed):
* belief in the Holy Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit
* the divinity of Jesus Christ
* the Virgin Birth
* the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ
* the ascension of Christ into heaven
* the future return of Christ and the creation of his everlasting kingdom
* eternal life

Similar also are
* the structure of church governance (a hierarchy of of various ranks and responsibilities of bishops, a priesthood, and a donate)Te * the change of communion bread and wine into the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ
* baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
* liturgical worship forms
* the major sacraments (baptism, marriage, ordination, confession, etc.)

Beliefs have become different in some areas over the years. The chief differences, and those which precipitated the split between Orthodox Christianity and Roman Catholicism, commonly called the Great Schism of 1054:

Orthodoxy believes
* the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father (Nicene Creed and John 15:26)
* the patriarchs of the various churches have no ruling bishop over them all, always having been organized by councils/synods of bishops

Roman Catholicism believes
* the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son (an addition to the Creed)
* the Pope of Rome is the presiding bishop over all Christianity

Additional post-schism Catholic dogmas, required for Catholics to believe, but that have never been Orthodox dogmas:
* purgatory
* infallibility of the Pope
* the immaculate conception of Mary
