It depends on which sect. Some sects believe Satan to be the giver of knowledge,, other sects believe that Yahweh is the god of evil. Gnostics also view the material world as evil.

Satan is Santa's buddy ,,he talks the kids into being bad so he doesn't have to make that many presents

but I think they are both imaginary

Some gnostic sects view Satan as a...mum knowledge giver.

Some believe that Satan was instrumental in creating the world since a perfect God could not create such an imperfect place.

I'm pretty sure they don't believe in the same Satan character the literal Christians do. As far as I know, the God of the OT is a deformed (?-by that, I mean 'not right', not just physically disabled) individual the Great Goddess tried to make on her own w/o the 'real' God. And that offspring is the creator of the earth/world. I guess they believe evil exists and some represent it more than others but not that an actual character who embodies it.

In Gnostic tradition the universe is divided into three levels of substance and reality: the Spiritual, the Natural (soul), and the Material.

Each level has its own theological principle:

Sophia is the goddess of the spiritual level, and she is in turn a proxy for the unknown Father who is in the Pleroma outside of this universe.

The God of the Natural level is the biblical Creator, who is judicial in character.

The god of the material level is Satan. Satan is evil and rules through brute force without any form of justice.

In Gnostic tradition the human race is divided into three classes: the Spiritual, the Natural, and the material. Each has its own "God" that it worships according to its own nature. Each can find its "God" in the pages of the Old Testament.
