Default Anyone here claim Gnosticism as theirs?

I've read some comments, and it looks like something a Gnostic would say.

Anybody willing to claim Gnosticism? What are your basic beliefs?
Buala (Sp?) - do you mind expounding a bit?
I guess I should have asked 'what is Gnosticism?'

Hello Suzanne!

My sister became an gnostic when my our dad died accidentally. She blamed God. Then she said she didn't think there was a God if he could let a good man die like that.

My sister and many like her have given up on God. They blame him for everything bad in their lives. Satan is the destroyer. He and his demon followers don't sleep. They watch us and attack our weak spots. Never allow place for the devil....get way away from spirit ism, and sorcery if you want to live forever.

Things will improve if you take one step toward God. He will meet you like the loving father of the prodigal son.

Because of the stigma of gnosticism, it's improbable that anyone would admit to being an adherent. However, in my own estimation, Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists and perhaps most following Kabballah incorporate some gnostic philosophies.

But who knows -- some day, we'll all stand before the Judge; perhaps many of us will hear, "well done, thou good and faithful servant. But can you explain where some of your beliefs came from, because it's nothing I ever taught!"

EDIT: It appears both of the answerer's above are confusing "agnosticism" with "gnosticism." They're different concepts, folks!

There IS a stigma attached to gnosticism: an adherent will be called a heretic by mainstream Christians. I'd call that quite a stigma!

I don't think that any of these people understand what gnosticism is. I don't think there can be any stigma attached to something that effectively died out 1500 years ago. In any case, using the word 'gnostic' is probably not the best way to describe a set of beliefs. The ancient Christian 'Gnostic's' believed many different things and 'gnosticism' was made up of literally hundreds of different groups (Valentinians, Marcionites, Naasenes, Ophites, Mandeans, etc, etc, etc). Many were characterized by the belief that the physical body is evil and the goal of spirituality was to release the spirit from the physical body by attaining 'nosies' (knowledge). Others believed that the body was good and that one should indulge in sexual pleasure. A lot of groups believed that the God of the Old Testament was evil (they called him Yaldaboath) and that the serpent was a Prue-incarnate appearance of Christ. The purpose of Jesus for these groups was to release the Jews from spiritual blindness. The final characteristic of much gnosticism was a belief that one was predetermined to salvation (sound familiar?). Although there are some people who claim to be 'gnostic' today (see WNW.gnosis.org) they cannot possibly know what the ancient gnostics practiced. Even scholars who have devoted the last 40 years of their lives to the study of gnosticism disagree quite strongly over what it entailed. In fact, modern interest in gnosticism has only really been around since the discovery of the coptic gnostic library at Nag Hammadi in Egypt (1945). This was the first known discovery of a substantial library of texts.
