Gnosticism is the acquisition of ascendant knowledge. This means that the gnostic has knowledge that is either very well hidden from easy observation, or cannot be deduced or induced. I view gnosticism as an acquisition of knowledge diametrically opposed to science. Science is descendant knowledge-- it goes down from experience -- gnostic knowledge goes up (science cannot go up). Not all people are equally gnostic. To be gnostic, you must have the gnostic spark.
Some gnostic knowledge would arise from intuition, other ascendant knowledge could have been acquired from god, either directly from God or through the mediation of some other soul -- angel, saint, dead relative.
The most profound gnostic was Valentinus, Some people suspect that Jesus was gnostic..
Examples of exceptional gnostic thought: The first lines of genesis, the Emerald Tablets of Hermes.
Jesus' gnostic acts: Healing of the blind man with mud: the blindness was probably caused by an infection, somehow,Jesus new that the mud would contain an agent (phages) that would act as an antibiotic for the blind man's eyes. That knowledge was a miracle.
