What is a good book about Gnosticism for someone with little prior knowledge?

I know very little about the topic, but am eager to educate myself. Other than Gnostic gospels, i.e. original texts, where might be a good place to start?
To DougLawrence: BS can be interesting. Novels, plays, television, and lots of other stuff is "BS" in so far as it didn't really happen, but we still enjoy these things and find them worthwhile. Furthermore, if it's not true, what's there to be afraid of?

I would guess anything about the Nag Hammadi (Sp?) scrolls would be a good place for material.

Most people enjoy Elaine Pagels, "The Gnostic Gospels", as a good introductory book on the subject.

The gnostic gospels are not original biblical texts.

They are late, crude, badly done "cut and paste" jobs that intersperse a bit of authentic scripture in between lots of ridiculous, make believe, gnostic BS.
