Christians: what does this verse mean? And is it an example of Gnosticism?
Rev 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcomeThill I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
What it means? In simple terms, "good things to those who persevere." This same basic message is repeated in several of the "letters to the churches" in Revelation.
To those that listen to god; I will help him erase his bad deeds and help him start a new life where nobody knows how except himself I think. It seems to probably be a example of gnosticism although not completely
Sounds similar to the reference to the "Water Bearer" that Jesus talks about. The Water Bearer will lead you to salvation.
I think this verse is mostly talking about Jesus veer 2.0 disguised under a new name and ready to completely change mans view of religion all over again.
If you love God and search, you will have an ear to hear what is said unto the churches, if you overcome the sinful world, you will receive the gift that God has to offer you, there will be a new heaven and a new earth, the dead in Christ will rise and the living will be change, you will receive a new name.
The person who overcomes by faith amidst terrible circumstances will receive hidden manna to eat. The hidden manna, white stone, and new name are all prospective rewards for faithfulness to God.This is not gnosticism.
