For instance, I've heard of Gnostic Christians, and Gnostic Pagans (i.e. today the Neoplatonists would be considered that by many)... But, are the Gnostic Buddhists? Gnostic Jews? Gnostic Wiccans? Gnostic Muslems? etc...
Actually, it could. Here are the tenets of Gnosticism:
Material reality is inherently "false" or "bad".
Material reality is the creation of an "inferior", "foolish", or "evil" being.
True "souls" or "spirits" are trapped in this material reality, often unaware of their status.
"Gnosis" (knowledge) of their true status can free these souls to ultimately rejoin the "true reality" that is "higher" than material reality.
Well since Gnosticisms Deimurge directly connects with an Abrahamic God it would be limited to one of the three Abrahamic religions. But then again gnosticism is a direct counter to the rest of the beliefs of those religions too. Gnosticism is not really anything like Neoplatonists. The basic teachings of Gnosticism. Dualist, trapped spirits, evil world. The only thing it shares is a name of the Demiurge (and not really). If you take little pieces of their teachings anything can fit with anything, but Ont generally once you take the whole.
Now if you take the teaching of nosies then it can go with anything, but nosies is just one part of gnosticism.
IS there a Platonistitsvement today? It began in the 200's CE (not the 1500's like someone else suggested) with Ammonius Saccas.
I agree with Hoosier Daddy in regards to the general ideas of "classic" Gnosticism from the 1st century. One modern group that I think believes a large part of this are those who believe in "A Course In Miracles." I find that to be an amazing similarity - almost as people get born, and reborn and re-present the same ideas they did MilenaIAgo. Amazing.
Early Gnostics were a really mixed bag of beliefs, scriptures and practices. Their main beliefs were that we humans were souls 'trapped' in a world of 'matter' created by an 'evil' lesser deity called the Demiurge. Sounds very much like a Matrix theology. Inner knowledge or 'nosies' was the key to salvation rather than belief in a physical, historical Christ.
Well I've kinda considered myself to be a gnostic pagan, but I guess I was only considering the "nosies" part and the part of the importance of knowledge. The whole evil, foul world thing does sound like the matrix, cool movie though
You cannot be "gnostic" and Christian. Because the teachings of "gnosticism" are exposed as evil and of Antichrist (satanic) nature throughout 1 John in the Bible.
Gnosticism was one of six different forms of Christianity. It would have been the current form of Christianity if it hadn't been for St. Paul and his conversion of Emperor Constantine. It is Paulian Christianity that is followed today. It would be a blessing if Christians went back to Gnosticism. It being more loving, caring, and respectful, a very Pagan concept. So Gnostic Pagans, Buddhists, Muslims? Why not, it would be a better world because of it.
